Bertolt, age 6 was sitting on the sofa and was spinning Rubik’s cube, waiting for his grandpa to come back from mountain climbing. His grandmother was sitting on her favorite rocking chair and knitting a sweater for her grandson. Bertolt never complained about the poor family or the fact that his parents abandoned him. He never did. He was happy with his family, his loving grandmother and grandfather.

He heard the apartment door creek open and ran toward it. “Grandpa are you back?” He went to the door and saw his grandpa. Next to him was a small girl. She had tears in her eyes. Her eyes were red and swollen.

“Grandpa, who is she?” Bertolt asked.

“I don’t know son. She doesn't even know her last name so I can’t find her family.” With that the girl cried even more. Bertolt didn't know what to do. He stepped close to her and hug her, “It’s okay. It’s okay.” He said soothingly. She stopped sobbing.

“What’s your name?” He asked.

“[N-Name]” She said through sniffing. Her long [h/c] hair fell and Bertolt reached over to tuck her beautiful lock behind her ear.

“Grandpa, what are we going to do with her?” Bertolt asked. Soon his grandmother came to see what was going on.

[Name] saw the old lady. She greeted the small girl. [Name] clung to Bertolt tightly. Bertolt blushed as the cutest girl he’d ever seen was grabbing on to him like that.

“We have to let her stay with us. It will be too dangerous to let her go out.” Mr. Hoover said as he took off his jacket and handing it to Mrs. Hoover.

“Then from now on, you are [Name] Hoover. You will be my little sister and I’ll be your older brother! You got that?” Bertolt said with huge grin. [Name] stared up and smiled. She nodded and hugged the boy. Bertolt hugged her back.

“This is Annie and Reiner. They are my best friends.” Bertolt said to the girl who was clinging to him from the back.

“Hi there!” Reiner said with loud and bright voice. Annie said small ‘hi’ and stepped toward her. [Name] clung harder to her brother.

“Annie, smile for heaven’s sake. She’s scared!” Reiner said. Annie rolled her eyes and told Bertolt to let her see [Name]. [Name] was trembling a bit but when Annie crouched down in front of her and petted her head she stopped.

“I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to be friends with you.” Annie said. [Name] smiled sheepishly and looked down. Reiner stepped closer and smiled. [Name] smiled back and they shook hands. Bertolt felt happy and hugged them all.

And from then, everyday when Bertolt, Annie and Reiner came back from school they hung around the town. They always played in a park which was 10 minute walk from the apartment Bertolt lived. Sometimes they played hide and seek, play catch. From time to time Reiner brought board game so they can all play with it. Annie brought books so they can take turns to read it like a play. That’s where [Name] learned to read.

One day Annie brought a fairy tale book.
“Kaguya Hime. It is one of the oldest literature in Japan.” Annie explained.

“How can you be so sure?” Reiner asked.

“It said it on the description below you gorilla.” Annie answered.

“It sounds interesting. Doesn't it, [Name]?” [Name] nodded at Bertolt's question.

“Wait, I want to read it.” [Name] said.

“Well then. You will read it to us then.” Annie said as she handed the book to her. [Name] sat between Annie and Bertolt. Reiner stood behind her, behind the bench to look at the pictures.

“Once upon a time there lived an old bamboo cutter. One day when he went to his work to bamboo forest. Then he found something shining brightly.” The picture showed old man dressed in old Japanese clothes, and front of him was something shining brightly.

“He walked closely and saw the shining bamboo. He cut it in half and there was a cute little girl inside.”

“How can a person fit inside a bamboo?” Annie asked.

“Don’t know.” Bertolt shrugged.

[Name] continued, “The grandpa took the girl home and named her Kaguya Hime, it meant ‘beautiful lady shining like light.’ He raised the kid with grandma like she was their daughter.
Soon grandpa and grandma earned a lot of gold and they lived with wealth.”

“There’s a gold in bamboo?” Reiner asked.

“It’s a fairytale.” Annie reminded him.

“The time passed and Kaguya Hime grew beautifully and lots of men proposed to her. But she rejected them all by requiring objects that no human can get. The final 5 men all gave up at the last request. But then the king who fell for his beauty proposed to her but got rejected. However she did agreed to exchange poems and they did for 3 years.

Then one day Kaguya Hime cried while looking at the moon. Grandpa and grandma asked for the reason and she answered, ‘I am a spirit from moon and I need to return the next full moon. I want to stay in this world but I am just so sad that I cannot stay.’ She said. When the king heard this news he made his soldiers protect her. But when the full moon rose for some reason the soldiers couldn't move and with protection from servants, Kaguya Hime left to the moon.

She left medicine for immortality for the king but he decided that immortality would be useless without her in his life and put it in the highest mountain in Japan. That mountain is Mountain Fuji.” When [Name] stopped reading she started to cry. Bertolt comforted her by patting her on the back.

“That was sad.” Reiner said bluntly and when he spotted some tears in Annie’s eyes he made fun of her and got punched.

“I wonder if she is coming back. If she wanted to stay she will come back, right Bertle?” Bertolt nodded at his sister. “Of course! She would come back and she would be happy.”

“Annie, can I have this book? I love it so much! Kaguya Hime is like me! Grandpa found me as well.” Annie turned to her, stop punching Reiner and nodded.

“Of course you can have it.” Annie said and [Name] hugged her.

Time passed. Bertolt was now junior in high school and [Name] was in middle school. Bertolt saw her grew up from a small girl to beautiful lady. She was one of the popular girls in her school. But no one dared to make move on her due to the fact that she was always with either Bertolt or Reiner. And even if someone ask her out she would always require things that they couldn’t do. Such as being taller than Bertolt or being bulkier than Reiner.

She grew even more beautiful as time went by. Bertolt would hide his face whenever she hugged him like she always did. Reiner and Annie would see this.

“Bertolt, is there something wrong?” Reiner asked. Bertolt would just get red and avoid answering.

“Come on buddy, I’ve been known you for the longest time. I know when there’s something wrong with you, now what is it?” He said pulling Bertolt down to sit with him. Annie was taking care of [Name] by taking her to mall.

“I, I think I am in love with her.” Reiner blinked. He had guessed this. But it didn’t feel too happy that he got it right, seeing Bertolt like this.

“Why are you so depressed?”

“Because she would only see me as her older brother. Big brother Bertolt. That is it.”

“You never know until you ask. C’mon buddy, it doesn’t feel good to see you like this.”

“But isn’t it obvious? She only sees me as older brother. I am sure of it.” Bertolt said while burying his face into his hands. His face red and sweating.

“Bertolt just ask her. ‘What do you think of me?’ isn’t that a nice question?” Bertolt shook his head violently.

“Bertolt. You need to be confident about yourself.” Reiner said and then heard knocking on the door.

“Coming.” Bertolt said standing up.

He opened the door and there were few men standing in front of his apartment door. “Mr. Hoover?” They asked.

“Yes. Is there anything I can help you with?” He asked. Reiner came as well.

“Yes, we are looking for a girl named [Name]. Do you know her?” One asked.

“You mean the girl with [h/c] hair and [e/c] eyes?” Bertolt asked and they nodded.

“How old was she when you found her?” the other asked.

“A-About 2.” Bertolt said.

“I wasn’t the one who found her. It was my grandpa. He’s in his store now.” Bertolt said. Reiner raised his eyebrow, “Hey who are you people? Why are you looking for [Name]?”

The men whispered to themselves and then coughed a little. “You see, [Name] is the daughter of the president of Sina Inc.”

Bertolt and Reiner gulped, “S-S-Sina Inc.?” Bertolt asked, the biggest company in the country.

“Yes. She was lost, believed to be kidnapped but someone reported that they’ve seen someone similar to the description at the school she attends and from what we think of now she is the one. We need to do few tests to see if DNA matches but it is almost certain.” Bertolt gulped, his body was shaking and he ran deep into the apartment, to his room.

“Sorry about that. Maybe you should wait here, he’s just shocked.” Reiner said and with that he followed his best friends.

“Hey, who are you people?” The men turned around to see two girls. One was blonde with blue eyes and the other was the one they’ve been looking for.

“Excuse me miss, but have you ever seen this emblem before?”
[Name] looked at the emblem. She blinked and bit her lips.

“I don’t know. But it does look familiar.” She said. The men nodded toward each other and whispered to [Name]. Her eyes widened. “You must come with us.” He said.

“What’s going on?” Annie asked.

“Annie, they know my parents…” [Name] said with tears forming in her eyes.

“That, that’s great! I um, then why are you crying?”

“It means I need to leave this place…” [Name] said, crying.

Annie didn’t say anything. Bertolt came out and ran toward her.

“[Name], please don’t leave." He said as he hugged her.

“I, I have to go. I don’t want to. But I just have to…. I’m so sorry Bertle. I’m sorry. But I can’t live without seeing my parents. I have to see them.” [Name] said.

“What about me?” Bertolt asked.

“I, I promise. I will come back. And we will make contact for each other. I promise.”

And with that she was gone. Just like the fairy tale she loved so much.

Showing the gratitude to the Hoovers, Sina Inc. promised to give them 5 thousand dollars a month until Bertolt gets his job. And they will pay for all of money Bertolt would need for his college. He was a smart boy, brilliant student who was smart enough to enter Stanford. He did and he majored in electronic engineering.

Years passed, grandma died and he was working for the company where they took his love and happiness. As time grew by his hope for meeting her again was disappearing. He missed her. They used to send each other e-mails but it had stopped as well. Just like the princess in the fairy tale she was gone from his life for good.

It was another typical winter day. It was snowing, not blizzard but just enough. He was returning home from the work and stopped by at the café.

“Hi Bertolt!” Sasha greeted him.

“Hello Sasha. Large caramel macchiato please.”

“Coming right up!” Sasha said. He was waiting and heard the bell on the door ringing. He turned around to see.

The woman was wearing expensive looking black trench coat and had purse in her hand. She had long [h/c] hair and she was looking down, dusting the snow off from her. She looked up with a smile. Bertolt lazily blinked his eyes and his eyes became wide with realization of who she was.

“[Name]….” He said walking to her.

“Surprise?” she asked with a giggle.

He slowly walked toward her and she ran into his arms.

“I, I….” he choked as he slid his shaking arms around her.

“I’m so sorry. Father was keeping me busy from everything. I was busy studying, working, ugh!” she complained like the old times. He hugged her tighter.

“I’m sorry.” She repeated and hugged him back.

“It, it’s okay.” He stuttered.

“Hey Bertle?” He looked down at her. It was good to hear the old nickname from her again.

“I want to say something. Can you come down a little, you are too tall for me.” She said. There were tears in her [e/c]. For a moment he was afraid that she was getting married, like you see in movies and soap operas.

He bent down and she surprised him with a kiss on lips. It was a peck but was enough to surprise the tall man.

“I love you.” She whispered.

“And never have I ever forgotten about you.”

Bertolt felt his tears forming and was now flowing down his cheek. He cupped [Name]’s cheek and kissed on the lips.

“I love you too. My princess, my dear princess. You kept your promise. And you didn’t disappear for good like Princess Kaguya. Oh, dear [Name] thank you.” He said and [Name] was crying as well. They hugged each other, swearing inside their heart to never let go again.

The moon was especially bright that night.
