For curiosity's sake and to better understand about shading, did you smudge any of this? Or was this entirely done with various thicknesses? And if you smudged, how much/with what?

No, I didn't smudge any part of it, as you said I just used different tones - I'm not particularly a fan of very 'smooth' drawings, I prefer the kind of 'rough' texture feel where individual pencil strokes are still visible and you can actually see that it is a drawing

Just the ordinary plastic eraser - can't really work the kneaded ones.

You know, the little ones...? they have a rather narrow charcoal core so they're good for fine details
