okay, so you have two brothers.  The author is brother 1 and Grunk is brother 2.  Brother 1 spends his life searching for monsters in Gravity Falls and never really gets a girlfriend or anything.  He's a loner and doesn't trust anyone.  Brother 2 is a conman and a thief, but he falls in love and has a kid (this is hinted at in The Cheapskate).  Something happens that causes brother 2 to move to Gravity Falls with his brother (maybe his girlfriend/wife leaving him and taking the kid, maybe he was just visiting). He gets into monster hunting with this brother.  Brother 1 builds the portal and gets sucked in. Brother 2 wants to bring him back, but he can't just stay in the shack, because he's a wanted man... so he fakes his own death and becomes brother 1.  Therefore, brother 2 had kids, pretended to be brother 1, the kid had Mabel and Dipper, which would make brother 2 (Grunkle) actually their grandfather.
