Description

The Planet Táoshén was discovered by humanity in 2387, a world that was earthlike in general geology but with an enviroment hostile to Terran life. For various complicated reasons, it's atmosphere was largely composed of methane. Despite that, a complex ecology emerged including methane breathing animal analogs. As such the Unified Earth Government largely overlooked Táoshén, establishing a small space station in orbit and a few ground based outposts for xenobiological studies and light mining operatings while the main thrust of it's colonization efforts focused on more hospitable worlds with oxygen nitrogen atmospheres. This state of affairs would continue until the Human-Covenant War. During said war, several POW camps were established on Táoshén for captured Unggoy soldiers. Here UNSC Linguists managed to decypher the Unggoy language. Many of the captives ended up as farmers working the land to feed themselves, miners and as workers in a few small scale factories.

After the Battle of Installation 00 most of the POWs on Táoshén were repatriated to the Swords of Sanghelios. Never the less, about 20% of the POWs elected to stay on Táoshén. With the collapse of the Covenant Empire, several refugee ships made their way UEG space bearing Unggoy passengers. Despite some resentment and opposition by certain factions within the United Earth Government, some of these were accepted and allowed to settle on Táoshén. A certain degree of reeducation was necessary, but even so the settlements steadily grew and matured. To help maintain order on the planet and after a couple of raids by renegade Kig-Yar elements, it was eventually decided in 2557 by UNSC High Command to begin a program of experimental training. While there was some rocky starts and some specialized equipment needed to be produce, eventually Táoshén produced it's first companies of Unggoy Marines were ready for service.
