Description

Linus and Uther at the Beehive Saloon. If you've read this chapter, I hope it looks somehow familiar.

One looks naive and eager, the other tired and jaded.

IMPERIUM LUPI

A decade has passed since the last Howler War and the City of Lupa stands peaceful again under the choking clouds of the Ashfall. The wild hyenas have been conquered, the little beasts remain subdued, and the wolf packs preserve their uneasy oligarchy thanks to the noxious power of imperium. However, new threats fester within the Lupan Wall. There are those who would overturn the rule of the Den Fathers, if not the dominion of wolfkind altogether, by persuasion, murder, even genocide, if that’s what it takes.

Imperium Lupi is a gritty, steampunk, fantasy adventure packed with intrigue and flexible morals. The true monsters are not the giant insects that stalk the wild world of Erde, but the beasts who don the mask of civility to cover their crooked convictions.

For the Republic Lupi!

PS - but I bork with custom brushes that have a slight randomness, and a nice tablet.

I'm sure the same thing can be achieved with other art programs too.

I gotcha, I have just inborkerated the roughness of my lines into my work, but as I look for some different styles I see a need to bork smoother lines.

My I ask which custom brush set you use?

It's an old brush set by Mike Nash . He may have a free link somewhere if you message him, or he may not, but there are lots of sets around on the internet.

Nice ilustration, Adam.Β  Speaking of those tight shirts, Boris has a problem fitting into them too.Β  Larissa often finds herself buying more because he rips them by accident.Β  XDΒ Β

Oh dear!

As I have said somewhere before, all my work is just a pale cartoon representation of these characters, and cartoons are hardly ever subtle. It's always a trade-off between realism and showing what you need to show with what few lines and tones you have. You'd hardly know Uther was Lupa's greatest athlete if one gave him a baggy T-shirt, so fitted garment it is.

Right.

And just the fact that you can get it out of your head, even if it is just a "pale cartoon" is fantastic.Β  I cannot do that, as I have never had any drawing ability.Β  i even tried to learn for two years, and I just couldn't.Β  I tried numerous artists, and all of them fell through for one way or another until I met Paul.Β  Since then, the relationship has worked swimmingly.Β  I also have to give Paul props because, prior to meeting me, he had never drawn anything anthropomorphic in his life, yet he stepped up to the plate.

And a balance between realism and cartooniness has been something I've discussed with Paul numerous times.Β  Primarily, the visual style needs to match the tone of the book, first and foremost.Β  There needs to be cohesion, both tonally and aesthetically.

^^ Right you are.

See my anthro art doesn't match the book's mood, which is why it will never appear inside.

And that's why you hired Mike, I imagine.Β

Honestly, the book is a gigantic undertaking.Β  I have about 200 pages to go, but am taking a break.Β  I've been reading A Farewell to Arms the past few days.Β  Excellent book.

As someone who's written giant books myself, I give you credit for your perseverance.Β  One of my books--the first book Boris appears in, actually--was 1,337 pages long.Β  In a year or two, I'm going to hopefully redo the book from scratch (because a lot has changed) and tighten the story up to about half that length.

Imperiumlupi In reply to Leo3680 [2018-07-14 20:40:22 +0000 UTC]

Yes and no, Mike's work also does not belong inside, but makes a good cover.

Some people read it a few days - I don't know how.

Shorter books are a good idea. You'll make more money that way.

Leo3680 In reply to Imperiumlupi [2018-07-14 21:12:12 +0000 UTC]

Then what DOES belong inside, Adam?Β  So far, I've seen three unique artistic renditions of the world of Imperium Lupi--yours, Mikes, and the other who does the comics--and I have to ask you: which one do YOU see meshing the best with what's inside?Β  I had to ask myself this same question numerous times.Β  It's a good mental workout.Β

I don't know either.Β  I saw a youtube review where this kid read it in like a day.Β  How is that even possible?

Honestly, I never aim for over 600 in a size 14 print for the first draft.Β  Admittedly, some authors like Charles Dickens wrote longer novels to great effect.Β  But you're right.Β  Shorter books tend to make more money because people read them quicker, and second, it forces you to make it as tight and focused as possible.Β  Third, it leaves room for sequels.Β

Professional sketch or a woodcut style, however I am unlikely to ever have any such pictures, just abstracts. All the pictures here are just to advertise.

If it's the video review I saw, I edited the book slightly based on his criticisms. Helpful.

Also print costs!

We all need advertisement, and that's partly what Paul's work for me is too.Β  In Paul's case, he's a professional comic artist--on his final year before his Bachelors, I think--so we're making long-term plans for graphic novels and such.

Constructive criticism is always, always helpful.Β  My own books have four edits.

That is a factor!Β  Smaller books are cheeper.
