Description
This has been a long time coming. I started the sketch for this about 2 months ago, but had to let it wait because Owlboy needed a lot of art updates.I had this vision in my head of this rackety lumbering metal something, fizzing and boiling across a meddow next to it's keeper, and the idea turned into this walking teapot robot of sorts. I gathered that these guys were out of their element (hence why the guy is dressed inappropriately for the enviorment) being overlooked by the native imps.
Like usual, I'm not going to provide much of an explanation other than the obvious. Always more fun to let people guess the stroy. Also, this temporarily satesfies my constant need to make giant things next to small things. So there's that.

Very neat concept! I kinda wish we could see the bot's keeper a bit more clearly, but the bot still makes a great focal point!

Keeping him in the dark was intentional. I wanted the viewer to see the steambot first, then notice that there's someone walking next to it, thinking about what his or her role is in all this.
I never considered Oz. The castle was inspired by an old Norweigan painting.

I kind of had that thought too for a second, but on the flipside, I didn't want it to feel like a miniture version of Howl's Moving Castle. The Gibli crew sure likes it's meadows though.

I love the feeling of air moving all around, what I imagine with this picture is arriving back to home, freedom and achievement. Beautiful work!

The petals were really a last minute thought, but I feel it tied the painting together nicely. I never considered the coming home part though. I suppose I've developed a few ideas about these characters already.
