Description Location: Fez, Morocco

“Morocco as it is is a very fine place spoiled by civilization.”— Richard Harding Davis

A passageway in the Medina (Old Walled City) of Fez

Huddled on a rocky hillside nearly 300km northeast of Casablanca, Fez’s ancient medina projects a buoyancy of spirit, it radiates, as if lit from within. Founded in the 9th Century, Fez is also Morocco's best-preserved old city, with many building that date back to the 13th and 14th Centuries. It is little wonder then, that the medina was declared a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site in 1981.

Large walls, built to defend the medina against attacks, stretch 8km around the old city, where no motorized traffic is allowed. The medina is one of the largest urban areas in the world that bans cars.  The walls that surrounds Morocco’s best-preserved medina hide a maze of narrow streets, 13th-century buildings and busy markets.
