Description Location:  Sector I-11  Islamabad Pakistan

From my previous expedition into this slum located in Islamabad .. (see my journal)  inayatshah.deviantart.com/jour…

I had found the people and the children, inspite of the poverty, squalour, and almost inhuman conditions they live in, they are vivacious happy and full of cheer.  I spotted this boy all by himself sad and forlorn dejected and alone... in a stark contrast to the numerous children all around.

I moved closer and was at an angle to peek inside the open door of the darkened hovel he was squatting outside.  I saw some men inside that quickly scuttled in the shadows to the other side of the room .. hidden from view again ..

I was going to get closer to investigate .. when two men .. with whom I had earlier been speaking with came upto me and said ... "There are bad men inside ..Drug addicts .. you better leave" ... and ushered me away ..

Things to make you reflect:
My son spent a year in Pakistan living in the village of his friend. He showed a picture of his modest house in England to an old man who said 'Ah, you must be very rich'. James asked him why he said that. The old man said 'Because you have plumbing'. He could see the pipes on the outside of the house.
Your gallery is a masterpiece of sensitivity.

I am sure you son must have loved his stay here.  I can easily relate to his experience.  I myself was brought up in the UK, and returned to Pakistan when I was 16.  I hadn't seen Pakistan before, I didn't know the language and I lived inside the old city of Lahore (back in the day) sans plumbing et al.

Here the divide between the have and havenots is tremendous and we ourselves tend to grow immune to the fact.  Every now and then we need a jolt to make us reflect and realise.

This really resonated with me. I may do a painting of some kind with that quote as a motif. Thank you for the inspiration!

This is a great photograph, but it is sad too. The little boy looks so lonely on his own, I wouldn't be surprised if the other children have been told not to play with him, because of what the adults are up too which would be a shame

I dont think the kids have been told not to play with him .. from what I see .. the kids and the people are not like that .. but I am sure they are staying away from that open door behind him.  Just to avoid trouble

I am glad to hear that, but I can see why the kids would want to stay away from that door

The same reason a couple of guys took me away from the front of the door. I had been talking to a couple of men there .. enquiring about how life is for them and who they are and how did they get here .. when I saw the kid and moved in close .. and I saw movement of men inside the darkened hovel. The drug addict father and his friends were inside .. they probably were afraid that they might get violent with me. They quickly hustled me away from the door and they told me that they were drug addicts.

I really think those guys did you a big favour from the sounds of it. I do feel sorry for the little boy though if that is his home. he deserves so much better than that, but I am also glad that you were safe and nothing bad happened to you!

My camera has gotten me into quite a bit of trouble along the way. I was just a hairs breadth away from getting beaten up for taking this picture

Although it looks quite innocuous .. if you read the explanation you will understand why.

I have just seen it and read the explanation. This is so sad, it does make you wonder which century we are living in. I am so glad you were ok and didn't get hurt, but promise me you will be careful out there my friend!

Sadly, this seems to be a scourge in almost every society on the planet. I live in a small Scottish town(pop' 26,000 approx.), and it is the cause of most the crime and violence in our society. There is a methadone replacement programme, but it is not working.

I have heard of countries in europe that are providing safe houses .. clean needles and syringes and a safe place for addicts to shoot up.  They say it will cause less deaths due to infection .. I can remember the time before we had the afghan refugees in pakistan (before the soviet invasion) .. nobody had ever heard of heroine.  The afghans brought it here and sadly they still are the biggest supplier of heroin in the world

There is a debate in Scotland (and Britain) about 'safe houses' for addicts. The argument is split. The NHS (National Health Service-Scotland) does provide clean needles and syringes as well as 'sharp boxes' and 'exchanges' at local Accident and Emergency  units at Hospitals. However, drug using paraphernalia is still found lying about the streets and parks. This is a terrible risk especially for children, in catching who knows what kind of infections. A few weeks ago a young child was 'stabbed' in the hand by a needle left down a seat on a public bus. The Parents and child will have to wait for months before they learn if the child has HIV or not. It's enough to make you weep. The Scottish Parliament has adopted a policy of allotting 25% of Council or Social Housing to Addicts. Their argument is that 'decent' people will help them to re-habilitate into mainstream society. Most 'decent' people would like to see how these politicians would like or react to Drug addicts allocated houses next to them.  I don't know the solution to this issue that is affecting almost every nation in the world, but what is being done at present is not working.
