Description This little green house is peacefully returning to the earth on NE 85th street in Redmond, Washington. Redmond was incorporated as a city in 1912 and I can only immagine this must have been one of Redmond's earliest houses judging by the styling. I think old things are neat, and if I ever have enough money I'd like to have a house built for myself that looks just like this one....minus the rotting boards and broken glass and moss of course.

The biggest mystery surrounding this house, however, is what happened to the most recent owners. The house is obviously condemned and abandoned, but is still completely full of furniture and stuff if you look through the windows. Did the last owner die and had no relatives to clean up the estate? Did they just up and leave one day and never come back? And how long ago did they abandon the place...because it looks like this house has been rotting for at least fifty years, but judging from some of the objects inside the house, (microwaves, recent looking Seattle Seahawks memorabilia), it must have been occupied at least into the 80's if not more recently...leaving the question...how much squalor and filth were these people LIVING IN?

It will foever remain a mystery. The house has a PROPOSED LAND USE ACTION sign in the front yard and won't be around much longer.

Rest in peace cute little green house.

Aww.... now i wanna cry! It's such a cute little house... why do they have to tear it down??

It's kinda rotted....like, really rotted. Like there's really no saving it and if you hit it just right the whole thing might come down, but I totally agree. What a tragic waste. As of right now the house is still there, (I'm almost wondering if the developers gave up on it...), so I still go say hi to it as I'm driving by on occasion.

So sad..... I don't understand why people want to build new houses when there are so many beautiful old houses that are just being left to rot... it just doesn't make sense!

I hope the developers DID give up.... Strange as it sounds, i think i'd rather see it just decay naturally that be torn down and replaced by new construction. It just seems less sad that way, you know?

You're right, it doesn't. And they don't build houses as well as they used to anymore either! The old craftsman houses of the 20's, 30's and 40's? Fantastic!

And I totally agree, I'd like to see this house keep on keeping on as long as it can. If nothing else, it's beautiful to look at in it's decay. Leaves you with a sense of wonder.

I know!! Frankly, the houses built now will probably reach this extent of decay in the next 15-20 years, where this one has probably been standing for at least 40 or 50 years..... But people aren't interested in the fixing up that an older house would take... they just want new and cheap.

I agree... And really, decay is sort of a natural part of life, if you think about it. Why not let nature take its course once in a while?

Ever consider trying to get inside?

Well, it's extremely tempting and the basement door is wide open, but no for two reasons:

1. I'm really afraid this thing might come down if I stepped on the right board, (or if not the whole thing I can immagine I'd at least drop into the basement from the upper level if I didn't watch my step.)

and

2. As you can see a corner of in the left side of the pic, there's a new, inhabited house not 30 feet from this thing and there's more new houses behind it, so I'd be at extreme risk of being seen by the neighbors and having the police called on me for tresspassing/prowling.

If this house was on it's own out in the middle of a field, it's be a helluva lot more tempting...

Oh yeah, that can be quite the problem if the police come. HEH, though I'd probably still do it... and there's a good chance if there was problems with the floor I'd go through. I'm rather...
large...

That's a bigger worry with me than the police so much...I'm actually quite tiny, but on that note I'm kinda frail so if I fell I'd definetly brake something ;_;

I'm lucky in that aspect. I have insane bone density. Unfortunately the joints that hold them all together have the consistency of jello...

Wow, this house is awesome. Has it been demolished yet?

I live in the area, so if it's still around I'm totally gonna check it out and get some pics.
...it's probably gone though, I would guess...

Ya it is totally awesome, and, luckily enough, due to perhaps the economy tumbling, whatever is going in here hasn't been started yet and the house is still totally standing!

Its on Ne 85th st, (the road that turns into Redmond Way further East and goes into downtown Kirkland further west), just a little bit west of the intersection of 140th (I think.) Anyways, it's really hard to miss. It's RIGHT on the road. And the best part? There's some sort of little pull off area right in front of it where you can park! (Maybe some sort of bus turn out? But there's no bus stop.)

Totally go check it out, it's an awesome house! But just as a note, it's right in with a bunch of new houses so I guess just be careful you don't walk onto someone else's property.

yeah, as soon as my schedule frees up a little, I'm gonna go check it out. I love old houses, especially when there's something unique about them.

Back when I lived in Olympia, there used to be this one abandoned house that was entirely covered in vines. It was pretty sweet, during the summer it just looked like a giant bush. It was there for about 4 years...too bad they tore it down.

Yeah, I hate it when they do that.

This house has some HUGE ferns growing on the roof around back XD

Only in the pacific northwest...

Thank you so much for the compliment ^^ And that was exactly my thoughts, I had always wanted to go photograph this house, but I drove by the other day and saw the sign in the yard and I realized it was now or never. Its such a shame, this house is just so cute.
