You groan in pain, lying facedown on the stone floor in a pile of rubble. With how old this castle is you should have expected weak floors. Your chest and shins hurt from the impact, but at least you brought your hands up in time to shield your face.

You start feeling around for stable places to prop yourself up, and that’s when you touch something smooth and warm among the cold, jagged fragments. Your fingers instinctively recoil, and you lift your gaze just enough to see a black, three-toed foot.

You gasp and scramble back, looking up to see the tall, dark creature that owns the paw. It makes no advance though, simply staring down at you with luminous orange eyes that seem more curious than angry. It blinks a couple times, then takes a step forward and half extends its clawed hand with a disarming croak.

What is this thing? Should you trust it?
