By the way, may I ask what model(s) of tripod and head you use?  Mine has finally given in to entropy, and I'm asking around to find out what other people are using these days.

Hmm, that's a really good question.
Mine is REALLY old, got it from my grand dad, it says: "Ilford Microphen" and "Cullmann West Germany" And I don't really now what you mean with "head"
I don't know if that helps you, I know nothing about tripods, I'm just happy I have one

Basically, a tripod consists of two parts: the legs and the head.  You can buy a tripod with both already assembled, or you can buy them separately and assemble them yourself.  There is a wide variety of both the legs and heads, and most of the professional photographers are picky about their choice.  Landscape photographers seem more picky than macro photographers.
