None of the family remembered a time when the scarecrow wasn't there, by the road leading up to the cottage. Aunts and uncles moved away, but one sibling always found themselves bringing their family back to the old family property through some combination of misfortune or tragedy. And each generation remembered that one of their siblings, the oldest, was never part of that diaspora - the one who disappeared the night of the great storm, once every two decades.

But times change, and a mother, desperate to break her family's curse, came up with a plan. Stories whispered from the past said that the scarecrow was only vulnerable if he was no longer on his post; when he hunted. When the storm rose, she sent her eldest, brave and bright, down that country road - with a lantern full of blessed oil, burning brightly in the night.

"If you hear a sound behind you, don't look. Keep walking, don't run. But the minute you feel something - swing the lantern, hard as you can - break it, and set whatever you see on fire. Free this family, and yourself. I'll wait by the window, and pray for you."
