If you were to ask Todd what his happiest memory is, he'd tell you it was the day he found out his sister was a wizard like him. Todd has human parents and two siblings, and while his mother loves him unreservedly, she doesn't quite understand who he is and why he is the way he is (frequently, she thinks it's something in her biology or her parenting that caused Todd to be a wizard (it's not)), and his father simply refuses to acknowledge him now that he is something "other". His brother, his closest friend growing up, is envious and doesn't understand nor wants to understand Todd and so is cruel towards him. But Celia is kind and curious from the outset, she immerses herself in his world and asks him questions in letter after letter.
Although Todd is loved and cherished by his friends, his friends have the advantage that their families know, understand, and support who they are, and that is what awaits them when they go home every summer, and for this reason, he feels alone a lot of the time. So late in his first year at school, he was overjoyed when his mother wrote to him to tell him Celia had used magic to make a paper bird fly and then in July when she received her letter, because like his friends he would have family at school and someone to experience this new world with him.
