Surprise is a pony from a previous generation that sort of inspired Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie was almost a pink pegasus, but her wings were given to Fluttershy instead.

Surprise! This is based on Lauren Faust's concept for the character that later became Pinkie Pie! She's from G3 originally, I think.

Actually, Suprise is a G1 Pony, all of the original concepts were G1 Ponies, but all but Applejack were changed into the concept we know today (poor Applejack )
