For the background I just used a plain black sheet, however any background would have really worked since he was in the middle of a room and I was only lighting him with the light from the flash.

It was an excellent idea to use the black sheet though, since the background is totally blacked out there's a great sense of depth surrounding him which makes your brother stand out even more.
