Just a fun superhero design!

She was very fun to work on and design, and I have been thinking through her backstory as well.

Originally, Carmelita Castillo was a professional women's kick boxer. Through her passion and dedication she quickly rose through the ranks and became a national champion. As her career blossomed, so to did her father's, who worked on medical nano-technology intended to improve muscle structure, reflexes, and strength specifically for those suffering from diseases and disabilities having to do with the muscular system. At the same time he was also being courted by the government to be part of developing a super-soldier program using the technology. He initially refused the offer, as the true intent of his work was to help his wheel-chair bound wife be able to walk again. Still, once he had finished the medicinal use of the product he promised to consider the idea. After all, Captain America has proved that the idea of a super-solider wasn't necessarily laced with evil intent.

Soon, however, financial backing for his work became scarce. As such, Carmelita volunteered to help. She became a sort of mascot for her father's company, wearing his logos and donating her prize money to his work. She, too, was passionate about helping her mother, not to mention the thousands of other affected by muscular weakness.

This extra boost in advertising and donations sent her father and his employees into a frenzy of inspiration. They eventually came upon what they believed would be a working prototype with some of the last of their donations. However, without approval from human rights organizations, they would not be able to find appropriate human test subjects. So her father applied, and, to his disbelief, was summarily rejected. Even after several bouts of communication, his proposal kept being denied. Seemingly defeated and with nowhere to go, Carmelita's father fell into depression.

It was at this point that Carmelia volunteered as a test subject. Her father tried to convince her otherwise. If she were to be injected with the nano-bots, that would easily be considered a violation of sporting conduct, and she'd never be allowed to compete again. Still, the woman was adamant about her derision, despite initial doubts. She would to whatever it took to help her parents.

Secretly, Mr. Castillo and his daughter returned to the laboratory and began preparing.

And then, all at once, everything went wrong. After the nano-bots were injected into Carmelita's legs and attached themselves to her muscles, they released high voltage charges throughout her body. Originally, the purpose of the ability of the nanos to discharge electricity was to stimulate the muscles and cause the user to be able to make faster, more controlled movements. Now, however, the overdose of electricity made Carmelita be sent into a fit of spasms, and her heart stopped beating soon after.

In a panic, Mr. Castillo did all he could to save her, using a defibrillator to start her heart once again. As soon as it started, another electric shock emanated from her body, this time lightning-like bolts striking electrical equipment. Flames burst to life all around the two Castillos, engulfing the room in deadly heat. Mr. Castillo and the barely coherent Carmelita fled the building and escaped to safety. Suspiciously, Carmelita noticed strangely dressed figures also fleeing the scene. In her delirium, she disregarded it as a trick of the mind. She would come to change her mind on that thought in the future.

A bit after they left the building, Carmelita collapsed, her legs refusing to move. She was taken to the hospital, but the nanites were irreversibly attached to her now, seemingly making her a cripple.

With the laboratory and all of his work destroyed, Mr. Castillo fell into depression once again, thinking that he had crippled his daughter as well.

One night, as Carmelita lay in bed, alone in her parent's house while her mind was a riff with thoughts and terrible questions about her future, a strange scratching noise caught her attention. After listening intently, she could hear voices as well--Not her parents'. The immediate realization of intruders caused her to panic, trying to move as best as she could to hide. Before she could, the intruders reached her bedroom, walking in on her in surprise. Taking in a sharp breath, Carmelita immediately recognized the strange outfits of the people she had seen fleeing the burning building. What did they want? Why were they here?

As the intruders moved toward Carmelita with malicious intent, a spark ignited inside her.

Suddenly, her legs were buzzing with electrical power, and she was now able to kick the reaching villain with all of her might. He slammed against the back wall, his body buzzing and sparking. Now on her feet, Carmelita got into her usual fighting stance, her brows lowered in fury. With a flurry of kicks and punches, the intruders were down for the count.

After this event, Carmelita worked to control her newfound nanite powers. With super-strong legs, lightning-quick reflexes, and electrical powers, she is ready to find out her attacker's hidden motivations and become the hero she's meant to be.
