Commission for World of Subeta!
kjdskfjdsfdsOMGBLARGLE you have no idea how relieved I am to have this done at last. ;___; I have been working on this since FEBRUARY, starting out with the design of the character , and then the composition of the piece, and then finally working on the piece itself. This has got to be one of the biggest commissions I have ever done - even if the character himself is only a chibi!

Ahhhh there are just so many things I could say about this!

For starters, this is the first time I've ever really done a full background that isn't just grass and sky or water. Or at least, the first time I've seriously tried to bring my background skills up to par with my character skills. This whole thing was an entirely unfamiliar learning experience for me!

I've never painted trees before, and after some trial and error, came up with what you see here. I'm really happy with the bark especially; I think it both aesthetically appealing and true to my own style.

Playing around with things like lighting was fun too. I had trouble trying to add in the leaves without covering up too much of that gorgeous sunlight.

The only custom brush I used for this thing were the leaves. *AlectorFencer 's brushes saved me so much time there, and they did a marvellous job, I think. Especially with the trees in the back! Everything else was handpainted with my favourite Photoshop Elements brush (the one that's in between the hard brushes and airbrushes!). It served me so well adjsfsfjf ;u;
And yes. I painstakingly painted in every blade of grass, stroke-by-stroke. It took a while. xD; I do wish the grass had a higher contrast, but ahwell; something to keep in mind for next time!

This chibi is actually a lot more detailed than he was supposed to be, because otherwise he looked out of place with the background. I thought about simplifying the background more, but it just looked funny so. Super detailed chibi it is. |D;;

I still have no idea how to draw rocks, but I am alright with the results so far. And the waterrr I wanted to paint a shallower stream but the brown wasn't working out, so I left it blue. Maybe next time. ;u;

All in all. I'm really quite proud of myself because it's been forever since I've done a proper background, and even longer since I've learned so much in one go!
