Description I'm actually not a HUGE Drizzt Do'Urden fan... I'm only just now getting around to reading Salvatore's "Hunter's Blades" trilogy (just finished the second book), and I enjoy it as a sort of modern continuation of classic pulp fantasy... elves and dwarves and giants and orcs, oh my, I got a serious soft spot for all of it. Of course, it didn't hurt that I also just picked up Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone for the X-Box, which has some really sweet art direction (and guest-stars everyone's favorite rogue drow). All of this has kind of come together to tip my hand into a little light fan art.

The whole Drizzt series was just getting started while I was in high school, so I got a bit of nostalgic fondness for the character. I was always very irritated at the early portraits of him, wherein artists kept illustrating him as an old man, because anyone who knows ANYTHING about Drizzt knows that he's a pretty young elf, less than 100, which makes him in many ways more the equivalent of a twentysomething.

If you're not familiar with the character, he's the creation of fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore, and a standard of the D&D Forgotten Realms universe. He's quite the iconic figure to fantasy fans, an outcast from his people and society, adventuring with his great panther familiar through the wild northlands of the world.

D&D illustrator Todd Lockwood nailed him pretty well in the big 3E revamp of the whole D&D universe, though, and this illustration is based heavily on his canonical design. I took some liberties here and there, espescially with his twin swords... while there's a very solid and set design for these blades now, I don't recall that they're supposed to be a matched set of identical swords. It's been a few years since I read it all, but I seem to recall that he picked up Twinkle in the Underdark, and Icingdeath in the white dragon's lair, so I always thought they should look slightly different from each other. There's also a lot of argument over the shape of the blades, given that Elmore and others illustrated his scimitars with flared blades more often associated with falchions, and yet Salvatore's described them as being very light and fast weapons. The Lockwood design is a little too straight and sabre-like for my tastes, and since I'm not doing this for WOTC I guess I can take a few liberties there based on my interpretation of Salvatore's work. Of course, if you're getting paid, you rarely have that freedom, and that's just part of the job.

God above, I can go on, can't I? Such a nerd...

Pencil on Bristol, about 14x16 cropped. You can check out a partial rough of the sketch version here >>> [link] <<<

If I was half the colourist I'd wish to be, I'd light this as though he were looking at the sunrise (the reason I chose to flip the drawing, aside from my usual pique, is that I think having him look to the left reads more as "East" than looking to the right, simply because we subconciously assign "east" to "left" thanks to maps and compass roses. But perhaps I've overthought this...). If you want to take a swing at coloring this version, I don't mind, but keep in mind that this is very much a recognizable character and design, and he's wholly copywritten, trademarked and owned out the wazoo by Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore... for this reason, I don't plan to take this much farther myself (might be fun to play with screentones) simply because I can't do much more with it before it becomes an effective cost consumer... it was just something I wanted to do for fun and as an homage to a character that I've enjoyed for over a decade now.

I just searched "Drizzt" and hoped to find a piece of art that I felt came the closest as to how I envisioned him.

This is by far the best I have seen. While the works are definatly good, this captures Drizzt's personality best, in my opinion at least. Not too calm, not too scary.

In short, I really like this amazing.

If you dont mind me asking, how do you go from a sketch like that, to such a perfect, rough work free, drawing like this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to Antrix32 [2011-02-07 03:37:21 +0000 UTC]

Hah! Hardly perfect, but I know what you mean.

The answer is working in layers, even when working with pencil on board. If you check out the rough version >> [link] << you can see that there's actually a lot of mess underlying the clean work (including an entire alternate Guen). The messy bit is drawn with a red pencil, which is then stripped out of the digital scan with Photoshop.

The clean lines never come first. It's more like building a house, with the rough underlying sketchwork being the frames that hold up the walls. You don't see the frames and wiring and insulation, but if it wasn't there the walls would fall down.

if someone was going to color your Guen, it would be nice to have highlights on her coz i haven't seen a nice looking line-art of Guen until I saw this one. In addition, I haven't seen a really good coloring of her too. I think Guen is more of the "OMG" factor in ur line art, really.

Game-plotting? Sorry if I'm an idiot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to LightandDark [2010-02-20 10:17:28 +0000 UTC]

No way, nothing to be sorry for.

"Game-plotting" is when the overall plot of the book feels like a record of game events, rather than a well-planned story. There's several examples of good game campaigns made into novels, but it's a tricky thing to do, and I'm not a writer so I'm poorly-equipped to explain how it works properly.

One example that was particularly bad for me was Promise of the Witch-King, which felt like the basic outline followed a game module, and then he had written a story over the top of that. I could be wrong, but it's a feeling that's turned me off on a lot of Salvatore's books in the last ten years or so. I've tried to keep up with the Drizzt series, but the last one of those I read was The Thousand Orcs.

I still really like the character, though.

LightandDark In reply to Inkthinker [2010-02-20 11:32:26 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see. The Hunter's Blades books aren't bad, but the Transitions series was alright. I mean, I understand changing things to fit with the times, but eh. I really liked The Cleric Quintet, mainly because it was only 5 books. And Ivan and Pikel are hilarious.

Inkthinker In reply to LightandDark [2010-02-20 14:29:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'll probably pick up the "Transitions" trilogy at some point, despite my gripes, just to keep up with the characters.

LightandDark [2010-02-18 07:09:08 +0000 UTC]

That is sort of amazing. You captured him pretty well. And they are a series of books worth checking out. Even though there are like 20 of them by now...

Did you ever read the Cleric Quintet? It's another of Salvatore's series. Just wondering.

Inkthinker In reply to LightandDark [2010-02-19 03:15:48 +0000 UTC]

I have, many years ago. I'm not as big a fan of Salvatore as I used to be, partly because every time I read one of his books I feel like it's got too much game-plotting.

I'm so in love with this work, though I'm neither the greatest fan of Drizzt *waves Artemis ftw -flag* But I'm a huge fan of Salvatore and Todd Lockwood, so, who cares Guenwhywar looks so beautiful in this, though she's a quite big kitty, she has a certain type of grace. And oh - my - gosh, those details! I wish I'd have even a half of your skills and nerves in lineart and detailing, duh.

Anyway, great work, luff it^^

Well drawn! I like the composition and the "line" created by the left sword / mantle VS the line created by the other sword / panther. Very good job with the details of the armour.

Thanks! Almost nobody notices composition tricks. Possibly 'cause I'm not very good at them still.

I can't take too much credit for the armor as it's based on Lockwood's design, but I did play with the details a bit.

It's a bit dark, but I dig it. The dawn was significant in that it's the magic hour for Drizzt, the moment when he affirms his independence from the larger population of drow, which cannot bear the sunlight.

Plus, it makes for a nice warm lighting scheme against the cooler colors of his skin and the panther's fur.

yay! thanx!i do love a good challenge! im actually messing around with a program called gimp right now til i get photo shop. i might just stop with gimp though cause its ticking me off. i have been having way too much issues with it. i figured out how to get rid of grey scale so i can have color only to get an issue with the stupid eraser tool. grr! so i am going to wait for photoshop(hopefully next week for that) to continue working on the pic. im going to post the occasional progress up date in my deviations if you ever want to see how im doing on it. once again thanx for the use of your line art!

I hope you don't mind, but, I'm using your rendition of Drizzt as a guideline for my 3D version of the greatest character on earth. I just finnished Lion-o using fan art as reference along with my own doodles. I havn't put anything up yet due to the fact that I have to resize all of my HD renders of him so that they don't look squished & I'm lazy!....& new to dA

& yes, Twinkle was given to him by Mooshie after he lost one of his scimitars in a fight. A Barghest Whelp broke his old one in half & placed it under a childs bed to frame Drizzt for a mass murder......that prick got his uppets I must say. That was in Sojurn..........................& I just realized that I'm a nerd

Anyway, this work is amazing & I'm sure I'll be cursing you for your detail when I'm trying to get the armour to spec

This is without question the best picture of Drizzt I know.
But I have to admit I don't really know a lot of them. I only hardly finished the dark elf trilogy. I stopped reading near the end of the 3rd book, when he hang out with this ranger and I thought: Ok why read on? All that'll happen is that he goes and kills a bunsh of orc. (later my roommate corrected me: The orcs come to him and he kills them)

Long story short, I like the character of Drizzt, but i'm not altogether too convinced by the books.

If you give me your permission, I'd love to color this lineart once my hand is healed, because I think is beautiful and very well done, full of tiny little details as I like and I can't draw so good my beloved Drizzt
I've just finished the first trilogy of The Dark Elf and I'm so close to cry again, your drawing reflects to me the great personality of the character (and all I've learnt from him during my reading) so, after this long comment, I ask for your permission again.
You did a wonderful work on both of them
