Description Based on the novel The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson . This is the tonal value paint for this sketch that I threw into the Scraps a couple weeks ago, something I've been burning my evenings on when I can spare the time.

If you just showed up to the party, Vin here is the main character in the "Mistborn" trilogy of novels. While she appears as the focal character in all three books, it's around the end of the second one that she's spattered with blood and mud, stalking through ash and mist with a six-foot slab of sharpened iron over her shoulder (although this is not meant to depict any scene in particular).

I picked up the series as a subject for practice paintings because I'm a genuine fan of the novels, but I'm also putting in some practical prep work. I expect it to come in useful.

Illustrated in PS CS2 on the Cintiq 21UX, total painting time about 3-4 hours, I think. It was hard to gauge time doing it in small chunks as I did. Feel free to crit if you spot something that does not click.

There is a color version soon to follow (already done, but I'm still letting it cool off).

i know this comments like 4 years old but pm me if you still want that, i just made one for myself (you can replicate the gradient if you're careful with the clone stamp)

The DL version there is 1200 high, so a 1080 version would be a reduction. There's really no way for me to expand upon the sides of the illustration without actually painting more of it. I appreciate the request, but I'd rather spend that time working on something new. The best I can suggest is to take the 1200 version and set it to "fit" or "center" with a black background.

I think I like this greyscale version the best. Great portrayal of Vin here, and the koloss sword looks awesome. I loved this part in the books!

This is so awesome! I always imagine the person I am reading about perfectly. You hit it on the nail! This is definetly Vin. I just finished the series and you pay Sanderson some serious compliment with this pic!

I like the idea, but she isn't supposed to wear metal anything. oO

If you mean the buttons and buckle, they're ideally made of wood (it's more apparent in the color version). Though I should probably have used a buckle design without a tongue to make that more apparent... it's something I'll try to remember in the future.

This series is amazing, though I just finished the first book. And the picture is really awesome too; I love the detail and Vin's expression.

Thanks!

Book 2 was my favorite (this version of Vin is from near to the end of that book), but his new stuff is even better. If you're enjoying Mistborn, then I think you'll be enjoying his work for a while to come.

I'm currently reading these, they're reaaaaally interesting. Though i havent reached this part just yet so now im sad cause a comment or two have spoiled a touch.
Good stuff though.

Inkthinker In reply to BrandonSwanArt [2009-05-13 04:25:56 +0000 UTC]

Aw! I'm sorry, I hope you haven't been spoiled too much. I'm not sure what's been spoilt, but if it's something in the Artist's Comments up there I could check it. I don't want to spoil the book (although I can't help spoiling that Vin is in book two and she'll be in a fight with big swords, just by the context of the image itself).

Don't let minor spoilers slow you down in the reading... it's all about the travel, not the stops.

BrandonSwanArt In reply to Inkthinker [2009-05-13 06:20:40 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I'm not too concerned. The only thing it really told me is that shes gonna go all barbarian bad ass on some colos fools. (so, it only really spoiled that she'll be battling them, which i was curious about that situation was gonna be handled as her getting in there to wreck some shit seemed unlikely as theyre so dangerous.)
However that certainly wont slow me down, the worlds way too unique to NOT finish. Plus, my gf finished, and she needs someone to talk to about it.
Oh, and it wasnt anything you said, a comment just caught my eye as i was scrolling down towards the reply box that mentioned colos. (i dunno how to spell that, since im listening to the audio books at work) Probably coulda just kept my mouth shut but i was feeling chatty and got excited cause it was Vin.
Outta curiosity, you intending to do any steel inquisitors? I've been rather curious as to how other people have interpreted them.

Inkthinker In reply to BrandonSwanArt [2009-05-13 08:40:53 +0000 UTC]

I've done at least two Steel Inquisitor pieces. Browse back in the Gallery and you'll find 'em.

It's spelled "koloss". Since I don't know if you even get to see them until the second book, you might want to be aware that I've done up a couple pieces on them as well.

I did save some WIP images, I'll probably put 'em together into something eventually (a GIF if nothing else), though I'm not sure how useful it will be. Basically I just smeared a lot of grey around with a very basic brush.

I'll pretty certainly be doing some more for this series.

Its a wonderful piece of work, but I think that of all of it thus far.. ^_^

I gotta ask.. What was the pics original size..? And what brush settings were you using..?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to dnomrah [2009-05-13 08:51:15 +0000 UTC]

A pretty basic round brush, one of the default settings I think. I'm still teaching myself basic painting techniques at a glacial pace, and fancy brushes aren't something I've messed with much on the general assumption that it's better to learn to do without. At some point I'm sure I'll start picking up more brush-specific techniques, but for now almost everything is done with a basic round brush, with opacity and size variance set to pressure sensitive and the minimal size not more than half of the full. Works kinda like a marker.

The original size is about 4x6@400dpi (or 1600x2400), so not particularly big. It was originally intended to be part of a larger composition, but I think I might have been a bit too ambitious at first.

Kid, you got it pretty good from where I'm standing. Practice, it's like a martial art or music or anything else, you've got to do it every day whenever you can if you want to get good at it. Don't neglect the boring basics of traditional drawing, even if it doesn't look like what you want to do. Those are the foundations that most everyone needs to build upon, and mastery of perspective, composition and anatomy don't go out of style. Without 'em, work is often hollow.

And hey, don't take that free healthcare for granted, either. It's better than none at all, which is what most of us get over here. You'll like that when you get past 30, trust me.

this is bad-ass, man. love the design of the sword and the ash scattering all over the place.

maybe i should try giving mistborn a read as i'm currently on a fantasy novel phase (is it a fantasy novel series?)...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Inkthinker In reply to chesterocampo [2009-05-13 09:11:06 +0000 UTC]

It's categorized as fantasy, but it's not traditional by any means. No elves or dwarves or dragons. There is magic, but it's magic bound by certain rules, in the same way that physics are bound by rules.

But it's got palaces and swords and nobles and peasants and monsters and magic (or something like it), so I guess fantasy is as good a label as any.

I love how you portray Vin. XD She looks so small - especially under the koloss sword but MAN she still looks incredibly powerful. ^^ You're an incredible artist, keep it up~ :]

Thanks!

I think now that the series is wrapped (at least for the moment), it's in a better position for the IP to develop through third-party developers (like the upcoming RPG). As that occurs, more visual development work will take place.

I like to think I'm getting in ahead of the crowd.
