Description Easytoon animation. Related to a series of sequences for "Joe is Japanese", these got buried for the moment and are only surfacing briefly here.

Most everything takes practice. Rarely does anyone get it right overnight. For instance. it took Joe at least three tries to become a pen-spinning master.

Easytoon v.1.9.5EN + Intuos 9x12, 124 frames in less than 4 or 5 hours. Easytoon is awesomesauce for quick and dirty proof-of-concept animation sequences. Built to play at 25fps, set in twos with the occasional one so a 12.5fps actual is more accurate, except when it's not. In Easytoon terms 12.5fps is equivalent to an Interval of "8", and 25fps is equivalent to "4".

I've categorized it under "pencil tests" because it serves the same purpose as a pencil test... it's a rough animation sequence designed for determining motion prior to ink & paint cleanup. The fact that it's been drawn digitally does not negate that... this is what modern pencil tests look like.

Sorry to ask you this out of the blue, but I'm looking to make an online series (free for anyone to watch) and I was wondering if you know anyone who might be interested in animating it; the episodes themselves would be fairly short.
Again, sorry to ask you this out of the blue.

Nobody comes to mind off-hand... you might find a student to collaborate with, but what you're suggesting is labor-intensive even at the most basic levels. And the more complex it becomes, the more it requires specialized skills and a lot of time to produce, neither of which are easy to come by or cheaply supplied.

Your best bet is to learn the craft yourself, which is a daunting task. But it's also the only sure way to ensure that it's done the way you want it to be. Even a basic understanding of the processes involved in production will give you a better idea of what you'll need to complete it, and that's useful knowledge whether you do the work yourself or hire someone to do it for you.

I hope that helps somewhat. If you've got a good idea and you really want to see it get done, keep working at it! It is entirely possible for one person to produce brilliant work on their own, but it requires a lot of dedication and it doesn't happen quickly. But if you love the process, the journey is more fun than the destination.

Thank-you. I don't usually get an answer that useful. I really appreciate it.

preatty cool, do you actually pen spin??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to dudotv [2008-12-15 01:46:51 +0000 UTC]

Nah... I can roughly twirl a pencil (learned that one in high school) or flip a quarter over the knuckles, but I lack smooth control... it's more of a boredom habit than a display. Moves as complex as this are past my skills, but I did spend a lot of time watching videos on Youtube and so forth.

Inkthinker In reply to Solsolisdeus [2008-02-19 23:55:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh, heck no. I can sorta stumble my way along without actually putting my eye out, but that's about it. I just watched a lot of video and broke it down until I worked out the movement.

I kinda want to try that pen-spinning thing now...

I can't get my hands and feet to do different things simultaneously. But then again, I can't say as I ever practiced at it for more than a few minutes at a time.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to thelink689 [2007-12-11 07:11:30 +0000 UTC]

Not too long... I've gotten better with hands because I break 'em down into basic shapes and I know what each shape does. They're probably the hardest thing to get right when you're learning, but once you got 'em they're easy.

I think only one word in the English language would describe this, and forgive me if from your personal outlook it might demean this animation, but I think "impressive" is the best word.
I see the wise message in it (as well as your comment) as well as the work you put in.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to shadowssurroundme [2007-08-25 06:34:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The problem with a cigarette is that it's usually too short. Even a pencil is technically too short, though I'm faking it well enough here I suppose. Check out some pen-spinning videos and you can see that they often use pens that are a good bit longer than average.
