Description Its name Corvus means “crow” rather than “raven”.
Not that that is hindering people from calling the constellation «the raven», more colloquially.
Why not?
Who is Ptolemy to tell us that it isn’t?

Ravens have a certain cultural importance after all.
Both to society in general and mythically

And yes.
This is the same raven that is mentioned concerning Hydra.
The same one that did not bring Apollo water, laying the blame for its distraction on a snake.
Which it brought with it.
Like some sort of a demonstration.
Yes.
Apollo was angry enough that he threw both raven and snake up on the sky.
Along with the cup.
The cup can be found up there as well.
On the back of hydra, just like Corvus is…

Just like Hydra, Corvus was recognised already by the ancient babylonians.
MUL.UGA.MUSHEN, they called it – the raven.
A raven perching on the back of a snake.
Both characters already present for the later greek myth.
Which makes one wonder where that story came from.

No.
This is definitely a raven.

Then again, who is to say Corvus does not mean «raven»?
After all the raven is a Corvid just like the crow is.
It would be like calling something «the primate» and saying that it means «human».
I mean technically it could…
But still…

Maybe it is Linnaeus…
And his classification….
That has led me astray.
