Description 1 of 12 in the Apparitions of Mary series.
In 1531, Mary appeared to Juan Diego in Mexico and asked him to inform the Bishop in Mexico City of Her presence. When the Bishop disbelieved Juan and demanded proof, Mary told Juan to climb to the top of Tepeyac Hill, whereupon he will find some flowers to gather. Since it was December, he doubted there would be any flowers, but sure enough, the hill was covered in roses. He gathered some in his cloak, or tilma, and carried them to the bishop. When he arrived and emptied the flowers onto the floor, the Bishop was not awestruck by the unseasonal gift, but was instead stunned to see an image of the Virgin emblazoned on Juan's cloak. She gave her proof, and after word spread of the miracle, millions of Mexicans were converted to Christianity. Our Lady of Guadalupe is perhaps the most famous Marian apparition to date.

The expression of Juan Diego of awe is so well contrasted by the serene expression of the Blessed Mother. The whole work is stunningly expressive.

This is beautiful. The colors are wonderful, and I love the expression of Juan(?) in the background. Is the lineart the monoprint and the colors the silkscreen?

InnocenceBurning In reply to pipe-organ-wolf [2008-02-27 20:25:13 +0000 UTC]

Actually the linear art is the silkscreen and the monoprint is all the color - I appreciate all your kind words, really!!
Sorry I took so long to get back to you... it's been a very busy summer, fall, winter... oy it's been awhile since I've been on!!

Thank you!! Nope, that's not me in the background (it's Juan Diego), although several people think I do look like him... not sure yet if I agree.

Hello, one of my HW assignments for my Art and Literature class this summer is a project and I chose to do representations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and I was wondering if you'd be willing to cooperate with me by first telling me more about the image aside from what you already wrote in the artist comment box, and then answering some more specific questions.
Thank you for your time.

This is a really powerful yet serene image ... you have done this in a very skilled and sympathetic way.
The colours are excellent. I find your work with Our Lady / BVM very touching and expressive.

I have just returned from a vacation in southern Spain. I photographed a number of images of our lady all richly dressed (mostly in churches) ... some showing her crying ... some showing her wearing a huge crown etc. These statues are very different from those I have seen in France.

The subject is facinating.

Excellent work ... please continue!

Thanks Phil, I always appreciate your comments.... I agree, the subject is so fascinating - once I finished with the project, I couldn't get Mary off my mind. Reading about her life and the apparitions was so tremendously inspiring.
I'm excited to see some of these photos - did you have a good time in Spain?
Glad you're back

This is really amazing, the colors, the composition; it just makes it feel powerfull, full of the majesty our Mother has. It's really, really lovely, even when I'm not really religious (I'm catholic by birth, though)

On another thing, the cloak isnt called 'Tilma' but 'Ayate', as it is known as the 'Ayate de Juan Diego', which is still in Mexico city nowadays. As a mexican, I can assure you on that point.

amazingly done!

InnocenceBurning In reply to Nekare [2005-09-15 17:24:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much, you're so kind!
I wasn't aware that it was called an 'ayate'. All the references I used referred to it as a 'tilma', but I believe you 100%. I did know that it was still in Mexico City - I hope to make it down there someday to see it in person. Have you seen it before?

Ooh this is awesome... I love the whole perspective and the expression of Juan Diego's face. It's done in a way I'm not used to seeing which is awesome, I usually (if not always) see the same picture of her again and again.

InnocenceBurning In reply to saraistarr [2005-09-21 06:06:45 +0000 UTC]

I'm so glad you liked it, thanks again!
