The situation that led to this was negative. It was an argument with threats of violence. Hell, Gerard was backed off of the cliff as an attempted murder. However, once he fell his wings snapped open and caught an up-drift. This is the first time in his life that Ger had ever had a sample of freedom, and he loved it. Flight meant independence, not having to think or worry about anything. It was the most peaceful he ever felt in the Pack of Stars.
