my keyblade here is made out of plywood and model magic (NOT modeling clay lol). I'm working on a few other keyblades that are made of insulation foam. For the kingdom key, though, best bet would probably be a dowel rod and some plywood

well, if you're making the kingdom key, the dowel rod functions as the main shaft of the keyblade. and I'm trying to think of what I've used in the past, it's a matter of preference and how heavy you want your keyblade how what you like best for the look of it. I think I've used 1/4" thickness.

I get it...I think. So the dowel rod is used as the middle of the handle up? Or just the inside of the handle, I'm confused on that...

it's the base for the entire keyblade, so it's the handle and the shaft onto which the crown-like key piece is attached to form the blade... does that make sense? lol sorry, I'm bad at explaining stuff

Okay, I get the picture now. But wouldn't the key piece, and the shaft meeting the handle be the same width? Then the part in the handle be smaller?

um, I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're asking, but if you feel the grip of the handle needs to be bigger or smaller than the shaft, you can either sand that part down or bulk it up with appropriate materials (like maybe some kind of squishy foam like stuff you'd find on the grips of handles or sports equipment, ya know?)
