It was hard for Nikare. All he had ever wanted was to find a way to cure himself of his chronic illness, and magic had seemed like such a way. However, all that living among the Kol had done was make him sicker. For two winters he had been ill, and the last was the worst yet. He had thought returning to the south, to Tundes, would be difficult, for he wasn’t sure how they would feel upon his return. He had not expected everything to shatter so soon upon his arrival. Mere weeks had passed and the alpha was dead and the pack had split, and Nikare had only one close contact; Sabah.

He followed her to Skydas, though he did not personally align with their beliefs. He had no desire to reunite the packs, or to befriend the Kol. Having just left, he couldn’t imagine how they would feel to see him; a traitor. He thought the Skydas were all great fools if they thought Malaysia would want to be their allies, but he kept his mouth shut on the matter. He stayed for his friend, and nothing more. [WC: 191]
