This is a very interesting, well thought out take on 'possession'. He (we assume it's a he) is like a ghost in her body. I wonder if 'Mali' can perceive him? A sort of very slow identity death as his personality is seemingly gradually being eroded. Skillfully done, as I would expect from you.

I think it might have been the other way around! Possessed by her, given a matching vessel beforehand for her sake. And seeing how she rushes to get a fresh dose of incense whenever she feels control slipping, I think she may know.
