I like it a lot, but I do take issue with one thing: in my mind, telekinetic magic is anΒ arcaneΒ application of kinetic energy. Β One would use far less magical energy if one used magic to levitate the entire plate instead of just a short arc of the edge. Laws of physics still apply. Gravity would force the plate to rotate in a plane parallel to the force of gravity, causing rotational motion of the system towards the floor around the point where Cele holds the plate. Β Considering she would have to apply a considerably larger amount of torque Β to work against gravity as the image stands, would it not have been wiser of Cele to levitate the entire tray instead of holding at such a small part?

To alleviate this issue, you could have the teapot and teacup in a layer between Star Swirl's layer and the platter layer. Thus you could illuminate the whole platter with Cele's aura (possibly a bit dimmer since more would be covered by it) without having to illuminate the teapot and teacup as well. Β The platter layer would be in front of the table layer and behind the tea set layer.

But I really don't know how you make your awesome art, so I may just be giving you useless or redundant information.

TL;DR Artistically, it's cool. Apply physics to the tray (assuming Cele did not change how she held the tray as she set it down from when she entered the room) and you have a slight logic issue. More layers (as if you don't have more than enough already using whatever program you normally use) This was just an observation. Take it as you will, and keep on getting better.

As far as I know Starswirl is before Celestia's and Luna's time, but historics aside it is a wonderful piece, I really like all three of them and the atmosphere is superp.

It is the best design I have seen for Starswirl yet, looks great Β

Gunflame345 In reply to Akernis [2013-10-14 09:46:30 +0000 UTC]

I would think they were around together, simply because Celestia and Luna knew about his unfinished spell. Plus there is the whole immortal business. But after thinking about your comment I'm reminded of Hearths warming Eve and I ask myself, where were the sister's then? I think the nature of their existence is not as cut and dry as we may think.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Akernis In reply to Gunflame345 [2013-10-14 09:58:43 +0000 UTC]

That was what I thought.Β

We know that Clover the Clever, as played by Twilight in the Hearths Warming Eve play, was Starswirl's apprentice so we know he was from the generation just before Equestria was founded.Β

However on the other hand the flag that Commander Hurricane, Princess Platinum and Chancellor Puddinghead planted in their new land to show their new-found unity bore the picture of Celestia and Luna on it. Of course that could just be a bit of free historic licence and that picture was added first made later when the two of them freed the land from Discord.

But it is certainly an ambiguous part of pony-history that we do not know all that much about. Β  Β  Β Β

I think (if you donΒ΄t mind that I join to this discussion) that they knew Star Swirl for some time, during his last years, but he then passed away when they were still young. In fact, I think that the princesses were born a few years after the creation of Equestria

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Akernis In reply to GUILLE832 [2013-10-14 19:19:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind at all

It is certainly a possibility. If they knew Starswirl they would have be born some time before the founding of Equestria, since Starswirl had already passed away by the time the ponies found Equestria (this is not a guarantee but it seems likely given that Clover now served in his position).

The odd thing is still the flag, but I think its depiction of the two alicorns in the Hearth Warming Eve play was more a symbolic gesture than the actual flag that the three leaders and their assistants originally used.

It is quite possible that our two princesses-to-be lived then, but they likely not yet become alicorns at this point, otherwise the three tribes would likely already have been united.Β

incoherentname In reply to Akernis [2013-10-16 03:52:39 +0000 UTC]

Spike specifically mentions in the opening narration that the story takes place before Celestia and Luna's time so they most likely weren't born yet. The flag could have been, as you said for the play only. Or Celestia and Luna could have been part of an ancient prophecy of 2 sisters uniting the tribes in peace and so the tribal leaders thought it appropriate to make them the symbol of their new found nation, like many real world flags. In time this prophecy would come true.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Akernis In reply to Dgs-Krieger [2013-10-14 14:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, when playing her (I assume that Clover is female) Twilight outright says "My mentor, Starswirl the Bearded, told me..."

Of course there could always be ambiguity concerning so old history, but as far as Twilight (who we know to be very well-informed about history) knows Clover was Starswirl's apprentice.

Dgs-Krieger In reply to Akernis [2013-10-14 15:53:06 +0000 UTC]

Hum....yup, I found the exact sentence. Interesting.

One thing I like about the show (And that gets even accentuated by ancient history) is that ambiguity you mention. That lets the Fandom do its stuff.

Akernis In reply to Dgs-Krieger [2013-10-14 19:21:20 +0000 UTC]

True, some stories can and should be told, but some are nice to have somewhat ambiguous in the dark so that the fantasy can wander and fans play with various ideas, like here Β

Dgs-Krieger In reply to Akernis [2013-10-14 19:43:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes. Such as the guy that thinks that Start Swirl eventually turned into Discord.

Also, I love those dark stories, that somewhat people manage to fit in the colorful universe of My Little Pony.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Akernis In reply to Dgs-Krieger [2013-10-14 19:53:04 +0000 UTC]

It is an interesting notion, but I don't see it, there is really nothing connecting them beyond a vague and undefined time period, strong magic and lack of friends (all of which, to be honest, applies to pretty much every villain of the show).

That would depend on the manner of dark, I think. The presence of evil characters like Nightmare Moon and Chrysalis for example really add a lot of value to the story for me, but things like some of darker fanfics written are... decidedly not to my taste, to but it mildly.Β

Dgs-Krieger In reply to Akernis [2013-10-14 20:29:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh, but what's the fun of making sense? Lets be honest, a pretty big part of the fandom is composed of completely umprobable stuff ^^ celestiathegreatest.deviantart…

Yes...most dark fictions tend to be...bad. There can be dark stuff, but there must always be a reason for that. Al-wa-ys. One can't simply take one character an dstart killing another one. Cupcakes falls into that pack. It has gotten absurdly infamous, for absolutely no reason. Rainbow Factory tries to make a story...and in my opinion, it fails for many reasons.

The Reight of Queen Sparkle is one that I would say has an excelent story and reason to be like it is. Cherilee's Garden is another that SO FAR seems to make sense. I say so far, because I haven't finished it (And...I have a feeling the autor is going to do something wrong, you know?)

That comic is actually not bad, I still doubt it, but I can see why some people would go with the idea.

Never read either of those, for which I am glad, I think "infamous" might be a more appropriate word. Though I won't take up space on InuHoshi's picture bashing things

I have not really read any of those but I will take your word for it.Β

Red-Fox14 In reply to Akernis [2013-10-14 15:15:53 +0000 UTC]

My belief(which I'll be using in a story, eventually) is that Clover's mentor was a great mage by the name of Star Swirl, and the Star Swirl mentioned by Celestia as having created the spell was the grandchild of Clover, who gave him to Celestia before her death so that the Princess could tutor him as her first student. Does that make sense?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Akernis In reply to Red-Fox14 [2013-10-14 19:36:24 +0000 UTC]

It is possible, but personally I highly doubt it.Β

It seems unlikely to have two characters different characters who are both named "Starswirl the Bearded" and who were both great wizards. I do not think that a Clover's son/daughter would name their child in honour of their parent's mentor and even if that was the case it seems unlikely that they would be given the exact same title "the bearded".

Besides Twilight never makes any distinction about Starswirl as if there were more than one individual of the same name at nearly the same time.Β

Beyond that I am not even sure that Celestia has had more than two apprentices, Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle.

Of course that does not mean you cannot use the idea, a writer can write whatever they choose in fanfiction. Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Red-Fox14 In reply to Akernis [2013-10-14 22:02:41 +0000 UTC]

It'd probably make more sense if I went into more detail about the idea, but I don't want to do that in the comment section, as I'd probably run out of space. Anyway, I realized that the daughter of Clover and Commander Hurricane(Who along with Pansy, I believe is male, despite being portrayed by Rainbow Dash and Flutters.) wouldn't have named their child after Clover's mentor, so the rest of that part of the idea goes like this: His father was killed in a battle with a dragon several months prior, and after the child's birth, Clover, who was present, commented on the fact that he looked similar to her mentor. The mother named the child Star Swirl, but died soon after, leaving Clover to care for the child. When Clover became too old to care for him, she entrusted him to Celestia. I'm hoping that makes sense, because I occasionally feel like a babbling fool.
