Commission forShe wanted her OC by the beach or a pool. Since her OC owns an aquarium, I thought it would be fun to add a fish. It's not based on any real-life fish, but he is based off Pudge from my favorite Disney animation: Lilo and Stitch.
Anyway, about the drawing:
I've a love-hate relationship with this picture...
The water actually looks like water, the fish looks both cute and somewhat well done (first time coloring a fish), and although I'm not crazy about the shading on Mariana I do love how her mane/tail came out.
Then...I decided to try out a different lighting technique, which made the picture look like the sun is setting off to the side. It looked great on the background, but not on Mariana. I simply couldn't figure out how to fix it....I added extra shading on her to help compensate.
As she's the focal point, I just can't un-see how much she brings the overall quality down. :/ Oh well...
(I also don't really like how the sand came out...)

I actually finished this literally a month ago but, the commissioner never okayed the final piece (just the sketch)...She already paid so I'm hoping its okay with her that I post it. Hope to hear from her soon.

Ooohhohohooo...I thought of you as I finished my latest un-posted drawing...It has SHATTERED my personal record of layers by more than double,..nearly crashed my entire computer each time I worked on it, and I'm pretty sure it's mere existence has slowed down my computer in general. XD

How on earth do you keep track of all those layers? Surely you run out of ideas for layer names. Lol
My record may be 30.
On this tablet, I am limited to 16 layers. You think I can make my Dash/Firefly picture look great with only 16 layers?

Oh dear god is it ridiculous...
I use to lose track of what was drawn on what layer, but literally like....two months ago I discovered GIMP actually has a folder option! So I make a folder for every thing that needs it's own separate layer of color and shading. Everything's so organized now I no longer lose track! 
I certainly think anyone can use much less layers than I do and make the same content. I don't though, because I make so many mistakes that I hate going back and re-doing the entire drawing. I'd rather have a huge file, than a smaller file where every little mistake will make me re-do hours of work...

I knew Photoshop had folders.didn't know gimp did. I only knew that you could make animated gifs on it.

Speaking of months ago, I ran into some sketches I made back in 2012. I think I should color them when I am finally not busy. Have you seen these before?

This looks good man! I think what might be bothering you about the sand is that the speckles in it are a little too uniform. The water looks good, the fish looks great, and the character game out really well. Especially the mane, tail, and her C-mark.

The more I look at this, the more I think you're right.
It was pretty tedious drawing all the dots, so after doing one type of speck I just kind of copy-pasted after awhile. Next time, I'll make a few brushes to speed up the process while making them less uniform.
