Well, Arkdevil wanted to see what I could do by hand, and here's what I can do. Of course I was using a leaflet for my comp, but it beats paper and pencil in my opinion.(The character is Al, from the, "Fire Emblem", manga.)

My advice for getting the right color on the hair is to use the gradient tool in photoshop. I'm telling you, it's a godsend.
Then after that all you need to do is (if it's covering lines that you have put in) switch the type of transparency that layer is using. The transparency I used was "Multiply".
