I can't tell you how much I love the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It's supposed to be for younger teens, but it's really enjoyable. I love how they flow, and it deals with one of my favorite subjects: Greek Mythology. If you like it as well, you'll love this modern twist on mythology. And you really grow with Percy. If you know your mythology, it gets a little predictable. But if you keep in mind that it IS a young adults' book, you'll be entertained. And there are enough twists and turns to make it surprising.Some of my favorite excerpts:
"See, bad things happen to me on field trips. Like at my fifth-grade school, when we went to the Saratoga battlefield, I had this incident with a Revoutionary War cannon. I wasn't aiming for the school bus, but I got expelled anyways. And before that, at my forth-grade school, when we took a behind-the-scenes tour of the Marine World shark pool, I sort of hit the wrong lever on the catwalk and our class took an unplanned swim. And the time before that... Well, you get the idea."
"Grover was an easy target. He was scrawny. He cried when he got frustrated. He must've been held back several grades, because he was the only sixth-grader with acne and the start of a wispy beard on his chin. On top of all that, he was crippled. He had a note excusing him from PE for the rest of his life because he had some sort of muscular disease in his legs. He walked funny, like every step hurt him, but don't let that fool you. You should've seen him run when it was enchilada day in the cafeteria."

Can I voice my opinion negatively? I promise I won't be rude.
The first one started out monstrously slow and then got even slower up until...like, halfway through. At page 270 (and there was a total of 480 pages in the book) they only JUST left on the quest. I'm going to read the other ones, but they definitely didn't meet my standards of a great book.
Sorry if you're offended, that's just how I feel.
Maybe I would have enjoyed them more if I had read them before Eragon, which is much more sophisticated, long, and a bit more fast paced with problems that aren't resolved as easily.

It's weird that you think it's slow... I found it too be very fast-paced. In fact, I finished it in two days. Although, when you compare it to Eragon... I guess that's where we differ, because I found Eragon to start out very slow, and didn't really get into it until two-thirds of the way in (although I had no problem with Eldest or Brisingr). Of course Eragon is going to be more sophisticated - it was made for a different age group. Even though they're all classified as Young Adult (I hate that classification, as it contains books for 7 yr olds all the way to 18 yr olds), the PJ series is more for 10-13 yr olds, whereas Eragon is too complicated for most kids that age and works better for 14+. I'm 30, and I enjoyed both, as well as the Twilight Saga and the Black Stallion series. The only series I didn't like (because of the ending) was the His Dark Materials trilogy (The Golden Compass and Co.). So maybe it's just that I'm a lover of all kinds of literature. And everyone's different. Not everyone can love everything. In books, music, and movies, some people are going to love things, while others won't. So your opinion isn't wrong or right, it's just yours.
I also have an eight year old and an eight month old, so kids' stuff is particularly enjoyable to me.

I love all the Eragon books, actually xD I just finished Brisingr, which is waht I meant. Yeah, I dunno. It was mostly only slow for me because usually the quest starts earlier in a book, whereas in PJ it started later. I'm 13, and you're 30

Well, you have to understand that in The Lightning Thief, Percy has a whole new world to get used to, so they have a lot of explaining to do. But I get what you mean. Personally, I don't like when a book is cover-to-cover action, but I know that many people also hate when a book starts slow.
Haha, no, it doesn't sound egotistical. Especially since at your age you are forced to read stuff like Of Mice and Men, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Othello. At least you might get a head start. ^^ For me, I started reading novels around 7 yrs old (my first novel was The Call of the Wild) and I had a strict godfather that made me read complicated novels, so sometimes I like to kick back with something fun, like PJ. And don't get me wrong: I love the Inheritance Cycle and I'm DYING to know when the next one is coming. I just thought that a good portion of the book was slow. It took MONTHS for me to finish it until I got to... I think where Brom died. Then I finished in like, four days.
Meh, it's nothing. I'm not the type that gets all worked up because someone has a different opinion than mine. (The only time I get mad is when someone says that Twilight is written badly. I don't care if someone didn't like the STORY, but the writing is great.) I'm just glad you voiced your opinion. ^^

That's true, actually. Cover to cover action is okay, so long as there are some breaks, and the problems aren't resolved like, within the chapter.
Oh gosh, I hate the books they assign us. I read Call of the Wild when I was only 11, so... x3 I liked it though. Not as much as White Fang. I can't remember my first novel. I think it was Peter and the Starcatchers in third grade.
Really? I finished Brisingr in a week xD But it was a bit slow, so I understand why it would take that long.

That's the problem with english teachers. A friend of mine and I were just having the same conversation. I wish I had gone ahead and gotten into teaching, but... oh, well. Anyhoo, what we were saying is that YES, english teachers are trying to teach something valuable by making you read Romeo & Juliet (personally, I liked it - I'm a fan of Tragedy) but they usually don't get that not everyone is capable of understanding the messege. But also, teachers don't have the luxury of personalizing a novel for every student. Wouldn't it be nice if one person read Hamlet, while another read Little Women, and yet another read Twilight? But everyone has to have the same curriculum, so... It's trsgic, because kids that are forced to learn something usually don't learn anything (I failed almost all math) BECAUSE they're kids, and anyone under the age of eighteen is like, hardwired to do the opposite of what you tell them.
Heh, I don't care. I'm not gonna say Twilight is for everyone, I just hate when people say the writing is bad. I have a guy friend that knocked the Twilight series so bad because he knew women who were obsessed with it and he didn't understand why we like it. Then he saw the movie, and when New Moon came out, he was all "Who's coming with me to see New Moon?!" XD
