Description EXTREMELY late gift for . Originally purchased a punky and was going to use that but had issues while attempting to make the widows peek. This was my first attempt and it went terribly. Needless to say I'll be using the wig for wefts since most of the crown is too screwed up to use. Not completely finished but its alot of small stuff I want to do when I actually have it on her head. Plus the small spikes on his temples will be a bit easier once they're more set in the rough location I put them in.

This time I used a wig from [link] that was purchased at Anime Boston this year. Since they just opened shop and do a different style of wig than most I'm thinking a review might be nice.

So hearing about them on /cgl/ I found the website where they claim their wigs are larger and fuller than other companies while still using completely kanekalon fiber.

The punky version of their wig is called the "Jareth" and from removal from packaging you can tell a number of differences from the punky. It seems to be a bit shorter by a few inches and the overall hair fiber is much thinner in strand thickness than the punky and is much silkier to the touch. Just as claimed on their site the cap for the wig is larger and with how insanely long my hair is makes for an easier fit. Also the wig is overall much thicker in the number of wefts and amount of hair per weft. Where as a punky has a weft every half an inch or so the Jareth's is around every quarter inch and instead of in places there being wefts sewn in upside down for body the wefts in some places are sewn straight through the cent of the hair so it has fiber coming out of both sides.

The wig you see above had very little done to it before styling, the roots were shaded using a brown sharpie which took to the dying process EXTREMELY well. When I went to rinse it in hot water and shampoo hardly any color came off. There were a few issues that came when spiking that mostly took place while working on the back of the wig. Since Kanekalon is so light and thin a fiber, or at least this was, it didn't like to stand out on its own. Although great in many other cases it was a bit of a pain attempting to get the back most spikes to stand out more without falling limp. Being a child of the 80's this was easily fixed by teasing the ever living crap out of it.

Really I think they developed this wig with mainly Axel's hairstyle in mind. Although it doesn't have the widows peek already put into it the crinkly part in the front responds really well to being manipulated into shape. As I was working hairspray through it I also noticed it would probably work just as well for Sora's hair though the back would need to be teased quite a bit to do his crazy back and side spikes.

Overall this is a really good wig for $40 plus shipping and anyone looking to make an Axel wig or any other hairstyle that needs a lot of hair for spiking should consider this before picking up a punky.

The new ones are a different type of fiber thats a bit heavier than the one in the picture so its harder to work with for styles that need to straight up but for a style that sits more flat like Riku or even Zexion I would say it is a very good wig. Just keep in mind that the bangs are probably about 2 to 3" too long for Riku, as in they will hit the bottom of your jaw instead of around you cheeks.

That version of the Jareth wig came with the roots fairly crimped and frizzy so it was easy to manipulate the hair into a faux widows peek by pulling it forward and down a bit. Sadly the wig was discontinued for their new heat resistant line. Not to say the new ones aren't good wig, they're just a bit harder to work with the heavier fiber.

I purchased this same wig and am having trouble styling it. What products did you use for spiking? And also if you have any tips or tricks on how best to go about styling, it would be greatly appreciated.

Did you order the older Kanekalon version or the new one with heat resistant fiber? I'm hitting problems myself with the newer kind that I haven't had a chance to really sit down and work out the best way to handle. If so I'll be sitting down sometime in the next week or so to fiddle with it, I'll post an updated review and my work around as soon as I get it done.

I do believe it is the heat resistant. Its cherry red with bits of yellow. What I do love about it is how resistant it is to tangles!

invader-gir In reply to Silver-Hourglass [2010-06-24 19:19:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh yea same deal, its just a heavier material so its harder to make defy gravity at certain angles. So far I've trimmed the crap out of it to lighten up the ends a bit which has helped a little but I'll be going in and attacking it again. I may end up just rubbing the thing against some fleece to rough up the roots.

So what sort of product do you use? My sister styled my friend's Roxas wig with "Got 2 b glued" hair glue. It turned out perfect. Of course she did sit down with a pic of Roxas and she numbered every spike so it is really accurate. She's all sick and tired of wigs now so I'm on my own! So you've worked with the heat resistant and the "K" stuff? (can't remember how to spell it)

That's amazing! It's one of the best Axel wigs I've seen. ^o^

Wait... So that's how much hair the Jareth has? Wow... I'm planning on making a Roxas cosplay for Anime Expo this year, but I've never styled a wig before. The light blonde Jareth looks pretty good for Roxas...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

invader-gir In reply to CDSH [2010-06-08 14:51:14 +0000 UTC]

The Jareth offhand, is probably 1.5 thickness, the thickness at the top is close to what you would find with a punky but around the back is twice as thick. For Roxas I normally suggest something with a little bit of a curl to it because his hair isn't so much a straight spike since it has that light curl to it.

Something like the Hansel or Magnum would be a bit better to work with as a base. They both will need a bit of trimming, but not as much as the Jareth. Just be sure to not angle your cuts perpendicular to the hair (as in cut it straight across) and cut it longer than you think you'll need it. Its always easier to trim it again.

I have a question. When you ordered this wig, did you choose the cherry red? I'm only asking because I'm worried about the color showing on the website: [link]

This obviously doesn't look like the color on your wig, yours looks a LOT brighter, but I'm a little confused. They don't have an option for an auburn on the site, so... I presumed that the linked picture was the cherry red color.

invader-gir In reply to Wolf-of-the-Leaf [2010-04-06 04:23:25 +0000 UTC]

Actually I hit that problem at Anime Boston this weekend. I was informed that they aren't going to be carrying the bright clown red color and there are two other red color options. One is more of a wine tinted red and the other is a shade closer to the bright red color with some orange fiber mixed in to tone it a bit. At first I was bummed about it but I bought the red with orange fiber and it doesn't bother me quite as much. Also the new fiber is heat resistant so its not as soft and thin as the older ones but they're still a lot softer than the Punky. Also the roots aren't really crinkled so expect to have to do some root teasing.

I will be possibly using this one for another Axel commission, just want to check the color out with the customer first. So I will more than likely post another review of the wig once I'm done. Just a warning this may be a few weeks so if you need it now its up to you. To be honest I think it'll work out well.

rogueymu In reply to invader-gir [2010-05-08 21:10:05 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. Let me know how it goes with the spiking of your new wig. I can always have them put a bit of crinkle back into the hair if they're not crinkled enough. Though the heat resistant fiber seems coarser in and of itself, so...I don't anticipate too much trouble spiking it. I've done some finger styling with the Turkish Delight and it sticks pretty much wherever I put it without any spray.

invader-gir In reply to rogueymu [2010-05-09 01:19:39 +0000 UTC]

Yep, fiddling with it a bit it has a bit more stiffness which should make it easier to spike. Will definitely be posting pics/an updated review and whatnot when I finish the new one.

I should be able to make it happen. I notice you have pics of Jenna in your gallery, are you semi local (NY/NJ area)?

Normally I ship my wigs on a wig head put in a box in a way that normally limits the amount of bopping around it does. So any damage is normally minimal and just need a little bit of hairspray to fix. But if you're close enough I might be able to do a drop off or meet somewhere.

Okay! I didn't know you lived so close. That would be awesome! I just need to come up with money, so I probably won't be able to get it for a while. I just thought I'd ask before I forgot.

Thank for the compliment. Worked with Punky's in the past and they're great for some things but a pain to work with for others such as smaller gravity defying spikes that don't have enough bulk to keep them up.

If you end up making an Axel wig be sure to post pics I love to see what people do with my tips. One last tip tho the biggest tip is to just be patient and know when to settle, rushing or playing around with it too much are the 2 biggest problems I've had personally. Good luck!

Awesome! Can't wait to see how it comes out.

And I've done it a million times. It looks awesome and you think you can make it better but end up doing something like putting to much hairspray on it to the point of making it to wet to dry quickly and it gets all limp.

Thanks very much for the review. I'm glad to see the wig worked for you so well, and your styling job was very awesome. I do agree with you that the wig needed to be a little bit longer for Axel, and my next run of the Jareth is going to be a few inches longer on the crown and down the back to compensate for that.

Thanks again for the review, I was glad to read it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

invader-gir In reply to rogueymu [2009-06-08 23:51:18 +0000 UTC]

Actually not really sure about the length on it. Axel is kinda a tough character to do wigs for since his style seems to shift a little bit. If it were for myself I think it would be a perfect length cause I'm 5'2". My concern is only in the person its for is nearly a foot taller, though looking at how far the back spikes hang down it may not be worth the concern. I'll hopefully have my camera on me this weekend so I can take pictures of the final result to show off.

If anything I would change how the roots of the hair are in the back. Having it being crinkled or nappy on the crown and then shifting into completely straight hair threw me off a little bit. I was able to adapt to it fairly well but it might be difficult for someone new at wig styling (why some choose Axel to start off with I don't know, maybe because I don't hate myself quite that much). Making the shift more subtle would help a lot I think.

I'm not sure I said this in my comment but thanks so much for offering an alternative that works so well to the typical punky. I honestly thought it might be a bit too good to be true when I heard about it on /cgl/ but happy my concern was for nothing.

Its ok, just remember if you have to cut, cut it longer than you think you'll need. And don't let the overall amount of hair intimidate you. part of what you think you will need in each section in the beginning and work you way in small sections from there. Plus hairspray is your best friend.

Did it last night, the dye job was done sometime last week.

And yea I know which details you're talking about, the 6 small spikes on each side are just cut and spiked as 2 spikes on each side. I was having issues with trying to part and style the pieces/keep them in place so I made them 2 larger spikes with the intention of letting it set for a few days before splitting them apart and making the 6.
