How do we carry on?
I can't get beyond these questions...

Clambering for the scraps in the shatter of us collapsed
that cuts me with every could-have-been

with the backup, makeshift life in waiting

but what of the wretched hollow?

There's nothing to see here now,

A stumbling cliched case,
crumpled and puffy faced

In lackluster, in dust we layer on old magazines,
fluorescent lighting sets the scene
in the one life that we've got

Here's some of the reasons why Monarch doesn't feel comfortable entering a relationship with Betelgeuse.

For one, she's not sure if it's her, or Saik who really wants to love him. Saik of course was in the same squad as Betelgeuse back when she was under Thymel's command in her military days, and he treated her somewhat like a little sister- Saik looked up to him and liked him because he was nice to her, her first friend, basically.

Later after leaving, Betelgeuse met up with her and tried to talk some sense into her. It didn't go well, for as soon as they got onto the subject of her murdering ways and him still being in the military, Saik lost it. She beat him quite badly, and tore out his eye, as you can see here. Monarch feels an unparalleled amount of guilt over this, because she can remember doing it with her own hands as Saik.

Also, there's the time when once again, Betelgeuse found Saik... And this time, it was him holding a gun up to her throat. He let her escape, but Monarch can't help but wonder if if he knew who she was, the same thing would happen. She knows he never would, but theres still a little part of her that's scared by the thought.

Also... Well, let's say a few things happened in the future between them, too XD Still working out that story, but I'll let you all speculate. Muahahaha.
