So, uh, can't do much to justify myself really, but I've been totally artblocked recently and I haven't gotten any sprites done in about two and a half months. Sorry! In exchange, have some old stuff: the devamps I did for the devamp 'em all project on /vp/ forever ago!Yes, they really did manage to devamp to RGB-style every single Pokemon from gen 2 onward.
Being an egotistical bastard, I'd like to claim I started it all-- by posting Aaken and saying "devamp thread, taking requests" and it went down from there. PorygonX did a good job organizing it all, although when it turned into debates over quality, it got less fun. Whatever, though-- it's done!

As for why I only did fifth gen: it's my favourite gen. (Aaken and Archaeos are my favourite pokemon)

If I did, they'd be here. So, I don't. But I think the Pokemon Red Randomizer project (which has a collection of all 721 pokemon as devamped sprites) has backsprites.

I actually think it's pretty easy, there are only 4 colors (including Black and White) so that is somewhat of a challenge and also you are working on a tiny canvas (56x56 pixels), but on the other hand you don't have to worry about having proper anatomy and it doesn't matter that much if you make mistakes because the official Red/Blue sprites were pretty strange looking too.

I didn't make Qwilfish, but have you seen the sizes of some Gen1 Pokemon sprites? Farfetch'd, Exeggcute, Rhyhorn and Gastly are all enormous!

Sure, I don't see why not. I didn't make the big sheet, though. (There's a version of the big sheet floating around that DOES have credits, so maybe you should hunt that one down.)

56x56, so yeah, it's small. most of them are squashed into that little box, too (Cofagrigus, Braviary, and Reshiram are especially "bad" in that regard). *shrug*

These are probably some of the best and most accurate devams I've seen. They've got the wonky weirdness that first generation sprites had... the fact that they're recognizable, but also at times over simplified for scale's sake. After all at that stage they were all beta, probably with no idea they'd catch on, and then the ideas got more refined as more attention was brought to them. This is definitely something you seem to have been aware of!

Oh wow, thanks! Yeah, in order to make a convincing "RBG-style" sprite, you really have to think like the spriters for the games; what are the most important parts of the Pokemon? How can I convey its personality through a simple sprite? Pokemon were exaggerated and really freaky back then; they were literally monsters. So it's a matter of finding which things to emphasize, and also not caring too much about quality.
They're quite fun to make, though!
