Description Warm sand between my toes,
wind in my hair, just a little too warm to be pleasant.
My t-shirt begins to cling:
humidity.
The sea air is in my mouth. My tongue and teeth,
and I wonder for a brief moment if I taste salty,
and if someone would test it if I asked them.
My hands grasp stones (blistering) and I climb. (Stumble). Climb again.
When I reach the ledge I stand. Wobbly yet masterful.
Rocks are underfoot and there’s
nothing
to hold on to. Any moment I could fall.
God would send five legions of angels to catch me, catch me,
catch me if you can.
Eyes closed and I can see the world.
Arms outstretched. All that dances on the horizon could be mine for the taking.
If I could just reach a little further…
Fingers wrap around my wrist, strong and safe.
I look back and she’s there, shaking her head and laughing.
Laughing with me.
And I can se the sun drown in her eyes to be kept there
safe
until it rises again like a phoenix from ash.
You came. I take her hand and she helps me down, and in a moment I’m a
little girl again.
(Though I never knew her then.)
She wraps me in arms that have grasped at life. She walks with steps in the sand I can follow.
I heard you calling. Her words are plain, simple.
Everything I need to hear.
Anxiously pacified I trickle to follow her. I know she’ll lead me
home.
Night chill roams the air. Darkness steals light until all that’s left are her eyes
and the glow from her smokes.
Grass underfoot. Springy soft and sweet with dew.
I’m salted and sweet. (She laughs when I say it out-loud).
She climbs in the car drape a hand out the window
(so cool, never trying, smoke curling and eyes inviting).
Music soft and winds in my ears. Hang out the window, stars like butter.
Creamy iridescence. Awake now?
Driving into the darkness; no license, no rules, nowhere to go.
Tripping the light, chasing the sun.
We’re just waiting, running.
