| Personality |
    | -tactless | -rigid | +whimsical | +humorous | +calculative | +thorough | =well-read | -sly | -distrustful |

Life among the cramped quarters of hardworking but crude and quarrelsome shipmates easily wore down a man's tolerance. Combined with the crew's charmless behavior, Gilles found it pointless to spare kind and gentle words. Thus now it is normal for him to speak without any tact. And after careful observation there is usually no room for argument. Call him a hardass, but often, it was the only way to be heard. By some miracle, he avoided adopting a potty mouth.

Any other time Gilles was generally playful and mischievous with his words. His shipmates taught him to be thick skinned, so it has come to be that his whimsical behavior and humor is synonymous with being tactless. All that mattered was lifting the mood on board (although, he had speculated that some of the tasteless humor his shipmates enjoyed would not fly by with... more civilized persons, thus to this day he is still teaching himself to tweak his humor. For some odd reason it has proved difficult for him). In short, he can be fun to be around but his airy, complacent manner gives off the impression that he cares very little about very much.

His captain, who appreciated the calculative, attentive qualities of his to man the steering wheel, or you know, drive the ship their entire er- profession depended on, were on decent terms. Being a sails master was a big responsibility, thus Gilles instilled a sense of thoroughness in his work at a young age.

When food, clothing, and other necessities dwindled, his captain would order an off-sight landing and half the crew went into town at midnight to swindle goods or pick up gossip in bars. Because Gilles grew up educated and well read, he was most fit to blend in with the regular civilians. But life at sea had turned him against society, thus he is now sociable but sly and deceitful with the majority of people he meet. It must also be mentioned that he's very distrustful of them.

| Weapon of Death |
A common cutlass. He owned the same one for years and it had never failed him in slashing rope or a torso.

| Cell phone |
T-mobile Sidekick 4G. The slide-able keyboard amuses him.

| Obituary |
1688 - 1716. Golden Age of Piracy. Death by decapitation.

| Bio |
Dawn cracks and before he knows it, his mother is gently patting his face so that he wakes. And then he is ushered out into an unfamiliar carriage that smells strongly of fresh leather with seats hard as rock. The usual earthy smell of their single floored bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen is gone. He thinks whatever this is, it's permanent.

Because this man, he is English. He is his new father, and he is rich.

They cross the French border and hours later they board a ship due North.

...

At school, math, geography, and even literature capture his interest so greatly that he would rather spend his day at school rather than at home. But he still goes home because that is where dinner is. And his mother. They greet each other with warm smiles. He sees often that his mother gives his stepfather the same smile, so he resolves to not stir up any unnecessary hatred. Gilles greets him formally whenever he asks to use his library.

Around town he visits shop owners and street vendors on the daily, exchanging humorous words and gossip and promised discounts. Encounters with classmates go about the same way. Charming boy, he is but he is close with none of them.

...

The head sailor at the harbor suggests that Gilles joins them for a ride to watch and learn the ropes if he pleases.  With a nod, he steps into the land of the sea where the rough ocean shows him that not everything is as easy as picking up a book and absorbing the lines. Neither can he persuade it, or tame it. The captain laughs at the young lad's frustration and suggests that he keep at it, yet it takes Gilles a year and some odd months before he can return without a broken sense of dignity. But he becomes a sea merchant at 18 and two years later a slew of pirates who take down his boat and take him in.

...

Surprisingly the captain meant no harm, he simply needed someone who knew how to drive a ship. That or being thrown overboard, Gilles takes over the wheel. For six months he watches the patterns of his shipmates and the captain, maintaining an amiable but wary distance until one day he confronts the captain.

So I must ask you, when am I to see England again? He asks.

When that little game of war 'tween the English an' Spaniards comes to an end, boy. Meanwhile, we see to our profits.

The collective "we" is proves real. Pirates are no different than other men looking to make a living, just with a completely new set of social rules. Compassion comes in the form of dirty humor, petty arguments, drunken storytelling, and an unforgivable disregard of hygiene. Gilles adopts these rules (the last one regrettably). Thus eight years at sea with risky raids, sword and gun battles, and common trickery shape him into the man before his death day.

...

He barely remembers it: first he's in a dimly lit bar, next the sound of unsheathed metal pierces the room, and then he falls into a void. But the void isn't supposed to be some vivid field of chrysanthemums, and it's nearly endless. It brings him back to the ocean, but this time the tides are folded bright orange with dots of pink and white instead. He feels bitter about abandoning his mother, but realizes to her he's been absent for a decade. He walks into his apprenticeship compliantly, but sighs about having to adopt another set of entirely new social rules.
Gilles doesn’t need social interaction twenty four seven (he had enough the last eight years of his life), so he keeps to himself when he can but always welcomes some superficial banter.

After having been around for 300 years, snipping the threads of those who are fated to die comes smoothly to him (emotionally, he still has some trouble seeing them). Of course he questions why he has yet to meet an apprentice who ascended, himself included. But after the first year of hefty contemplation, he resolves that they were all damned regardless, once they awoke in that sea of flowers. Until new information arises, he leaves such philosophical questions to those who weep over their death and disappearance from their intimates.

When free of his duties, Gilles enjoys wandering around the seemingly endless hallways of Death HQ, keying down any new corridors or promising shortcuts. In some aspects He feels it easier than navigating the sea, since it's never the unnerving sight of a blue ocean and blue sky that never seems to budge. He is never hesitant to step into the uncharted areas of Death HQ either, rather he is compelled to venture forward.

| Extra |
= Gilles' threadcutter username is a parody of his captain's ship, "The Silent Owl," which symbolized their stealth and speed for raids. But when they weren't thieving, days were filled with sorry excuses for singing and arguments while night were filled with the loudest of snores. There was never any piece, unless their captain put on his "this is serious" face
= The giant scar is an embarassing story
= Much more comfortable being bare foot but he finds that footwear appears to be an unspoken law in Death HQ so he's relieved that moments before his death he had been wearing boots

OH MY HEART HIS POOR FACE BUT AMG

man, a dead pirate is a wonderful idea. He's so cute and I love how he's not very much of a fighting pirate but more of a swindle your heart guy. That would be very helpful in getting out of shenanigans, yes.

Can't wait to see more of him!
