Description
It was a quiet, starry night in the Starfall Woods, named after the frequent meteor showers in the forest topping the misty plains above the cliffs of Canterlot, just outside the Equestria border. The only sound besides the whispering of the icy fog was the swish of a cloak as a solitary figure proceeded up a well-worn dirt path. The woods were rather quiet, a strange sight compared to the life-teeming Everfree Forest.
The figure proceeded uneasily up the road, stepping over potholes and avoiding bumps in the road, his hooves clicking on the dirt and stones as they stumbled up the hill. They moved with a quick step, knowing only too well the dangers of these woods. This was the border between Equestria and the Crystal mountains, combining the fauna of Equestria's greenlands with the snowstorms of the Crystal Kingdoms, creating a hostile no pony's land.
The fog was close drawn that night, pull closer to the figure as he ascended up the hill, the only light a dull glow from his horn, the magenta glow just enough to see where he was going. The bluish-grey creature sighed, his breath misting ahead of him, as he stopped to catch his breath. He wasn't cut out for climbing, he decided, huddling into the warmth of his cloak.
Further up the path, an even less careful trekker was making her way down the trail, sniffling and running, her mangled clothes providing no protection against the chilling winds. She hurried down the cliff, heading unknowingly towards the cloaked figure.
The dangers of being out this late were obvious as another low howl emanated, mournful and oppressive. In this area, the frost-tinged winds and the magical crystals combined with the trees to produce the feared cousin to the Timberwolf, the Mist-wolf. These monsters were similar to normal Timberwolves, but their limbs were held together by the strongest ice, making them alot more durable. Needless to say, anyone familiar with this stretch of land knew to stay far enough away, as the cloaked figure was.
The girl hurried down the hill, unable to see in-front of her until she went careening into the cloaked figure, and fell back. He cried out, his horn producing a powerful blast of magic that scorched a nearby tree, leaving a burn mark. "W-who goes there?" he asks, flaring his horn to clear the nearby fog.
Crouched down he saw an anthro girl, sniffing in the dirt. She was like most anthros, the hooves of a pony on the lower half of the body with the thinner, more dexterous hands of a Diamond Dog or Minotaur on the upper, and the similar ability to stand upright. She also had wings reminiscent of a pony, and cried as he met the cloaked figure's gaze.
"D-dont hurt me!" she pleaded to the cloaked figure, her voice breaking the silence of the woods like the shattering of an icicle.
The cloaked figure stopped, and his horn dimmed as he extened a hand out to her, his hood falling back to reveal he was also an anthro, a taller one with the horn of a unicorn. "I don't intend to" he replied quietly, his voice echoing in the fog.
---
The girl slowly got to her hooves without taking his hand, stumbling over her clothes. She was in a ripped-up green top and blue skirt, both of which sported various signs of wear and tear. As she moved forward into his magic light, various scars and cuts marred her yellow fur, indicating she had been the victim of some sort of abuse. On her right arm, a small armlet sat, glowing slightly.
Shakily, she mumbled "I-it's no problem..you can be on your way.." , not meeting his magenta eyes with her blue ones. She made to turn to leave, the cold and harsh trail stretching out down the hill from what she could see through the fog. He spoke againm breaking her focus and bringing it back to him.
"Miss, you look injured and I can't leave a lady like youself out alone." His voice spoke of his concern, and he spoke with a kind tone. "These woods are danger-" He is cut off by a long, mourful howl of a Mist-wolf, worryingly close, emenated from the fog.
"-ous." He stopped, turning around and flaring his horn, showing the clearing was clear, at least for now. "Come, I heard there was a relief cabin nearby." He looked back up to her with his dark magenta eyes, ten looking up the trail to a dim golden as the moon came from behind a cloud, clearing the fog briefly. He swore he saw the swish of a Mist-wolf in the trees, and he turned back to her.
The girl seemed unsure of herself, and gazed down at her armlet as if scared, before looking up to him "Oh-okay" she whispered weakly, following him his step as he led her through the fog. They walked in silence, the cloaked figure on the lookout for an attack and the girl following in his wake.
The mist has a strange effect on the feeling of time, and in what felt like an hour of walking but was infact only a minute or two, a brown shape burst out from the mist, of a small wooden cabin, made with thick, sturdy wood. A small latern emitted a warming golden glow as they approached, and he put on hand against the door, waiting for her to catch up to him before they headed inside.
