I usually scan my paintings twice, each scan in opposite direction to the other, so the shadows of one image become the light areas of the other one. This method removes the most annoying parts of the support's texture and allows the colors to be better seen.

First I create one layer for each image in Photoshop and I change the opacity of the upper one to 50%. Then it's just matter of making them coincide, and that's all
