Happy 10th anniversary ROE!!!

For those unaware, the first issue of Godzilla: Rulers of Earth was released on June 19th 2013, exactly 10 years ago, meaning that today is the 10th anniversary of ROE! I first read ROE back in June of 2021 and I loved it so much that I wanted to eventually get physical copies of the comics. This year for my birthday I ordered the two complete ROE volumes which ended up arriving a lot earlier. Given how I finally got physical copies of the volumes and how it was this year was the 10th anniversary, I couldn't help but make a special drawing for the occasion. I love ROE a lot, it's probably my favorite comic ever (not that I read that many comics tho lol) and I wish people would discuss it more often since it's a really good story with amazing visuals. I just had to make a special for it!

At first I wasn't really sure what exactly to draw for the anniversary. ROE is pretty long, having 25 issues and also having a HUGE cast of monsters, so boiling it all down to just one most iconic moment would be pretty hard. ROE is recognized for introducing the Trilopods, but I felt like making a drawing with just the Trilopods wouldn't be enough since they're not all that recognizable within the fandom, since it's mostly the ppl who read ROE that are aware of them. Then I thought more of how large ROE's cast was, so I came up with the idea of drawing a BIG group pic featuring some of the Kaiju present in the comic! Obviously I couldn't include all since there are A LOT, but I still managed to include quite a handful, since I ended up drawing 24 characters for this illustration, which is the largest number of characters I've ever drawn in a single piece.

I included Godzilla (obviously), Jet Jaguar, the two Mothra Larvae, Anguirus, Baragon, Zilla, Varan, Gorosaurus, Mothra, Rodan, King Caesar, Gigan, Mechagodzilla, Orga, Megaguirus, SpcaeGodzilla, Destoroyah, Battra, Biollante, two Trilopod Alphas, one Trilopod Beta, and the queen of Trilopods herself, Magita. I chose these guys since they either had a lot of screentime, or had memorable roles. I know there could've been more to add, but this drawing was already big and took me 4 days to make, so I am satisfied with how many I included. I decided to put Godzilla in the middle, his allies in his left, his enemies on his right, the Trilopods bellow him and Magita above him. Thought it'd look interesting like that and I ended up being quite happy with the overall structure of the piece. Jet Jaguar and Gigan occupy a bit more space since those two happened to play really significant roles in the comic and had memorable interactions with Godzilla, as well as memorable interactions with each other, so I thought it'd be interesting to make the look like they're mirroring each other. Magita being above all was probably the best choice, since she's the final boss of ROE as well as one of the biggest monsters in the franchise as a whole (Matt Frank who drew illustrations for ROE and also designed Magita said that she might be around 500 meters tall, which is already bigger than Godzilla Earth, although Chris Mowry who was the writer for ROE said that Magita is around 8 times larger than Biollante, making her around 960 meters tall. Either way, she is HUGE). Drawing this many monster was actually quite fun. There are some that I haven't drawn in a long time but I finally got to draw again thanks to this piece, such as Anguirus, Baragon, Gorosaurus, King Caesar, Megaguirus, Orga and Magita, and some I have never even drawn before such as KiryuGoji, Varan, Showa Rodan, Showa Mechagodzilla and the Trilopods. This drawing took me 4 whole days to finish but I absolutely love how it turned out and I had a lot of fun drawing it and I'm glad I managed to finish it in time.

The background is rather obscure and the lighting is red since I wanted it to resemble some of the fight scenes in ROE, which either took place during sunset or had a bunch of fire caused by explosions. I think I did it pretty good. I wasn't really sure what to do with the shading at first but I do like how it turned out! Also should mention that this drawing ended up breaking my layer record, with a total of 534 layers (somehow both Medibang and my computer survived and the file ended up only having around 5MB, which was a lot lower than I expected).

I am very proud of this piece, definitely one of my all-time favorites! I put a lot of effort into it and it really paid off. I teased it a lot in my status posts last week because of how excited I was to show it and I'm so happy I can finally show it to you all!
