Never heard that theory (I hardly remember Totoro tho) but it certainly is fitting in your style when rendered with that concept! He certainly looks resemblant to a Shinigami, I also love the way you drew the trees in such a creepy gnarled way to twist around the moon rather than block it out. Very well done!

I watched this movie during visit in my acquaintances flat, together with his young daughter. The girl was so happy but I couldn't stop to think how sad this story is - the seriously ill mother, family who needs to move to little ruined house (maybe because they became poor because of the cost of healing), father who now has long way to work and back and simply cannot deal properly with two kids left under his care. The older sister who tries to take her mother duties but is too young to think about everything.
And much later I talked to a women of my age who turned out to be a fan of Ghibli anime. She told me that it was a theory that the story is based on the real story about a young girl who accidentally drowned and her sister who commuted suicide after the accident. And that some say that the cat-bus actually comes for the girls' ghosts to take them to their mother.
But enough about the film - your work as usual is very good! I like your style - it is original and easy to distinguish from the other art
