what's lunar new year?

irisho In reply to gaktion [2010-07-15 15:09:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh, Lunar new year is the new year celebrated by Chinese
The Chinese would celebrate new year following a traditional calender, which is different from the one we use nowadays,as it is slower for about 2 months.
Therefore every year Chinese have a new year on 1Jan and a lunar new year in Jan or Feb.
Lunar new year is very important to every Chinese family^^.

wow really so if their calender has 2 more month then...?

Not really
Take an example, now it is in the middle of July, but the traditional calender shows it is in the early june, and for next month it's the same case.
Since the method of time counting is different,it just runs later.

oh thats really interesting.^^ so why is it called a lunar new year?

irisho In reply to gaktion [2010-07-16 02:35:49 +0000 UTC]

I am not sure either
Maybe it's related to method of time counting...
Chinese in the past made the calender by observing the position of stars and the moon, therefore call it "lunar".
It's not that scientific,so most Chinese nowadays will not follow the traditional calender, but only for festivals.
