MARS, MAY 2002

The sandstorms eased up. Christie Vega and her mercenaries took the opportunity for a break, parking their combat mechs where they stood. The trio were making good time, only a few hours from arriving back at home base, Fortune Outpost.

But their break would not last long, for the desolate Martian landscape was restless. Dust devils were converging on the horizon to form another massive wall of sand, which slowly crept in their direction.

These constant sandstorms were an unforeseen result of terraforming. Humans had attempted to conquer the Red Planet by giving it a breathable atmosphere and Earth-like gravity, but she fought back tooth and nail.

This is part of Charlie's World, a sci fi setting I am making.

It is an alternate universe that deviated from our own in 1960, with the discovery of a crashed alien space ship. The Cold War never ended, the Soviet Union never disbanded, and technology grew rapidly due to reverse engineering of the wreckage. The current year in this alternate universe is 2002, and it resembles a cyberpunk dystopia. Megacorporations rule over Earth, and colonies have been established throughout the solar system.

Mars is the most populous off-world colony, and the only one where terraforming was "sort of" a success.

There are two nods to the lore:
- The USA flag sticker on the windshield of Christie's mech has 40 stars, not 50. This is because 10 states seceded and formed the Free Californian Protectorate.
- The Saturn Mining Corporation logo on the gun. It is a product of the company.
