The funniest thing is being 100% Mexican and getting the same facial expressions from people.

Usually something like that happens to me....except it's more like a "foreign people always asking me where am I from and people FROM MY OWN COUNTRY are constantly asking where am I from AS WELL" kind of scenerario -_-U No idea why.

Ha! Everyone in our neighboorhood speaks spanish, and my brother and I are middle eastern, so everyone thinks he speaks spanish and starts talking to him. He has no idea what they're saying, so my really white (I'm talking freckles and green eyes) step brother translates perfectly. It's pretty funny watching people's faces. They're not sure who's who!

I get looks like that sometimes. My skin has barely any color to it. Probably all the Northern European in me (Scandinavian(just about every country), Irish(my great-grandfather came directly from Ireland), British, German, etc.) Funny thing is I have Cherokee Indian on both sides and not that far back either.

The exact opposite happens to my family. See my step-father's last name is Bolivar. Yeah, like SimΓ³n BolΓvar, El Libertador. Only problem is that his family's from, get this, NOVA SCOTIA and look every bit the part (pale skin, pale hair, pale eyes). But my mother, who is pure French Canadian, is really dark (dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes). So not only do we get random phone calls where the person on the other line is speaking rapid spanish (which no one in my family understands a word of). But people often assume that my mom is because of her last name and how she looks.
Let's just say I'm thankful for the fact that the only problem I have to deal with is that some people think I can speak French (but that's only if I pronounce my last name correctly, which for simplicity's sack I usually don't).
*reads over comment* Yeah, that right there is why people don't ever ask me to tell a story in real life. I don't shut up. Sorry.

As a naturally blonde, green-eyed, pale, 1st language is Spanish, Mexican, I experience this often.
And I must say: YESSSS.

...Does that mean you wanted them to go? I'm learning Spanish right now in school and am desperately trying to incorporate it into my activities since my family members all speak Chinese.

Hola! Yo tambiΓ©n soy Boliviana!
And I also get told I am too white to be latina. Umm... oligarchy >> The first time I meet people who speak in English (Both Europeans and Gringos) they just say that. And sometimes people think I'm Swedish. O-o
Pero ahorita estoy en Peru, asi que me pasa un poco menos.

No se mucho de eso, pero tengo la impresiΓ³n de que en Estados "Latino" significa "Mexicano" y por ende ser moreno y bajito. No saben cuan equivocados estΓ‘n. Yo se que no parezco Mexicana, vivΓ en Mexico y el consenso era que blanca, pero me pregunto si parezco latina (allΓ‘ al menos)

That happens to me all the time, unfortunately. I grew up in a predominately Cuban neighborhood in a suburb of Miami, and as such, am "culturally latina" (or so says my university's student affairs office), yet genetically I'm anglo (welsh/dutch/irish). *hugs*

*cracks up* I know how that goes. I'm the whitest genuine whitey who ever whited, but somehow I've ended up with a very convincing Japanese accent, so whenever I open my mouth over here in front of a stranger (or, better yet, behind them, for the old turn-and-double-take), eyes start a-poppin'.

It's a pain on the phone, though, because when I call computer tech support or stuff like that, I'm perfectly accented but have no idea what they're talking about and keep going, "Huh? Huh? Bwuh?" Generally they're increasingly confused and start speaking very clearly as if to a disabled person until they hear my name, and then they go "OHHH" :0 and try to transfer me to the English helpline...
