If this isn't the "correct way" then I want to draw incorrectly from now on.

Hey nice tut. Just had a question. How do you know where to darkens the shades and where to avoid? My shading looks unrealistic. And how do you avoid 2-d solidity, like you mentioned? Any advice would help, thanks! ^_^

You should first practice as much as you can with the shapes (of the face etc.). When you learn how to shade the areas in the face, you will be able to shade the areas of the hair as well..good luck

It's never about the so-called "correct" way. This rendering of hair has both depth and character. Thanks for an excellent series of illustrations that make up a great tutorial.

I see that you've drawn a brunette, but would it be different with a blonde? I'm drawing a blonde and adding the additional 'wisps' of hair is proving to be a challenge. Any help?

blond hair = much lighter pencil strokes and a lot of erasing!
