<< Part Two || Part Three || Part Four >>
They had been going for days. Days upon days. It was both a gift and a curse living so far away from the castle and the kingdom. They had their privacy, their land, but when the time came to be of service to the Queen, the trek was a long, arduous one. All throughout the time they traveled, both stallion and rider thought of home. Of the farm they had left behind. Of the family they both knew all too well they may never see again.
Simon had left his brother and mother behind in that old house. They had promised him they would come with the rest of the population. Mihael would never break his word. But still he wondered. Wondered if they would make it. If any of them would. They had little idea of where they were going, and there was a mutual fear about the whole land. It was felt not only in the villages, but in the trees and the soil. The water of the great lakes quivered with it, knowing somehow what was about to come. But still, people heeded the call, just as Simon had. They still stood behind their rulers, still wished to help, and they would let little stop them no matter where it took them.
Khan, despite his nature, had been cooperative. He seemed to sense the mood, and had carried his rider fearlessly through forests and open plains towards their destination. He too had left behind family, but there was a determination in his eyes. He was about to do this for them. For his darling son and heir. He would see him into safety no matter the cost. The brave little soul and begged him to be allowed to follow, but although it near broke his heart to deny him anything, he had told the youngster to stay behind with his dad. Midas had a tear in his eye when he'd said goodbye to his mate, but the dark stallion had promised them both they would be safe with their people, and that he in turn would stay safe. If only for them.
The next day of traveling would be their last. It would be the hardest, but the first leg of their journey would soon be over. The air was chilled, but the wind had died down, and as the two settled by the fire, they both looked at each other. No words were spoken, but they seemed to have gained an understanding. The faint outline of the crumbling castle and it's lights could be seen in the distance and shimmering light of the moon, but it was still a hard thought to stomach, knowing they would have to leave it all behind. They would find their home somewhere else, but it would be hard. Still, Simon tried not to think think too much on the subject. Instead, he focused on the thought of proper food and a warm bed for the night when he reached the castle. And that night, he had his fire and his horse. They were the only things he needed to get through this.
