This happened in Left 4 dead-gameplay. I was caught by a smoker and he could’ve killed me, but as my character wriggled for his life, smoker just hold him for some time and then let him go, unharmed. That was a lucky bug.
Here is the incident done by my winter infected. It’s more fitting for winter smoker to act like this because he was an ice fisher. Fishermen may perform catch and release, first tiring the struggling fish, then maybe taking a picture of it before letting it go. Sometimes they give a kiss to the fish.

same thing hapend to me while on multiplayer 2 out of 4 survivors were dead, it was only me and one guy. i decided to make a run for it cause im a dick, i mean i would've tried to help my teammates but i had no molotov and i was low on health so i could not fight the tank, while running i came face to face with a smoker , there was a small tree between us, the smoker caught me , i tought it was over, the entire team is dead, we failed then i noticed that i wasn't getting hurt at all i was stuck in the tree without any injuries, the smoker released me and i killed him. and yea we did manage to finish the campaign because right when i was on low hp and my only teammate left was down, one of the dead teammates respawned in a closet right after the guy got incapacitated. so i was saved by a bug

Oh that happened to you too. Apparently it's somekind of glitch which comes if there is something between you and smoker.
