depends on the bear.If it's a black bear make as much noise as possible.if its a brown bear grizzly bear or polar bear you either have to make yourself look taller and show the bear your not afraid or as you said play dead once the bear leaves don't move,a bear may double check and return if he sees you move.and only use fighting as a last resort
