I still can't believe that "Feel the benevolence of Mara" is Erandur's actual battle cry.
I don't know about your Tamrielic dictionaries, but if that there is your definition of "benevolence" I'll want none of it. Note to self: do not pick a fight with priests. They'll just set you on fire and crush your skull with a mace while shouting paradoxes at you.I feel like some credit should be given to steam-powered-magpie for "love hurts" addition...
Also, another theory is that Benevolence of Mara is Erandur's mace ... Which would actually explain a lot.Skaila Skaran © me

In Amalur I slaughtered every priest I came across. I don't mind the priests in Skyrim, but the ones in Amalur were rotten and had sticks stuck WAY too far up their butts.

Well to be honest, it's like the song 'Jesus He Knows Me' by Genesis. "Just do as I say, don't do as I do!". Which to be honest is hilariously true, given the fact that in Skyrim there are a few Hypocrisy's to be found. And let's be honest, in a country that is basically a 'Warrior Nation', you better know how to swing something or blast something. EDIT: And love DOES hurt people.

Mayhaps he meant love as in 'love under will', which can be defined as 'any action or motion performed under will'. That way the way he acts will be deferred to his will, or maybe he was referring to Mara's will, or calling out saying that his will was as strong of that as Mara's, which would probably explain the point of using a Mace... no wait, that's a metaphysical construct... Bah, just something that came into mind.
Oh, and he's a Dunmer... Too many 'coincidences', this happenstance has been killed.

I honestly hate the Vigilant, I don't even think their own god supports what they're doing... because
1) You can still get a blessing from Stendarr, after killing the Vigilante during the Molag Bal quest
2) He probably would've protected them from the vampire attack, courtesy of Harkon
3) He probably would've protected them from you during the Molag Bal quest.
I mean, he protects you with an amulet... even if you worship the Daedra... right?

The whole idea behind the Vigilants is stupid. The were founded so they could fight Daedra/Daedric princes, should they try to cause trouble again. That logic fails, because of Martins sacrifice. Also, Daedra can't be killed (main difference between them and the Aedra, who CAN be killed. Right Tsun, Shor?), only banished back to oblivion. And even IF you kill a lesser Daedra (or would the singular Daedroth be correct?), they will resurrect in the waters of Oblivion.
1) That part is supid. In Oblivion you couldn't get a blessing when you played an evil character unless you went on a pligrimage.
2) I doubt that. It was a suprise attack and everyone was inside the hall. Plus, they are wearing ROBES. Yes, along with Steel Plate glove and boots, but robes with no armor rating. Not to mention they are apparently rather easily overpowered by Vampires. As seen by the Road side event, where a bunch of Vampires posing as them call you over.
3) Molag rigged this one. Making you and Tyranus fight. You had no choice in that quest. Either kill Tyranus or be killed by him.
You are the Dragonborn, a mortal blessed by Akatosh and Kynareth. Guess that makes them turn a blind eye on your actions.

Mara is basically Tamriel's universal mother goddess, having birthed the races. Her Benevolence is for the population of Dawnstar, NOT the people of Nightcaller Temple.
Any mother worth her salt isn't going to let someone harm her children, and neither is Mara. So, she sent Erandur to open a mege-sized can of whupass on Vaermina by killing her followers and destroying the Skull. Erandur also yells "For Dawnstar" on occasion as well. So, there you are! (But I like the fact that "The Benevolence of Mara" is what he calls his mace. And you are awesome, Isriana!)

In my game, he also lets loose a 'Nerevar guide me' once in a while. Though that may be dialogue bleed through from the other Dunmer that share the voice.
though I like the mace name answer, too. This is now headcanon for my game.

I'm so sad that this quest is broken for me, I really liked this guy. Unfortunately my character can't get through the gorram ROCK he's supposed to spell into nonexistence.

Yeah, same thing happened to me. Luckily my Skyrim is on PC - I eventually just used console commands, and walked through the wall to get to the other side and progress the quest...

The command is TCL as in toggle collision. That should allow you to follow him through the wall. Just remember to toggle it on again on the other side, and repeat the process on your way out. Hope that works for you!

Holy shit, i JUST did this quest this very morning and then my boyfriend linked me to this now. What are the odds? I found that guy hilarious as well, actually! I love the details you put in such as the mace he is carrying, which was a dwarven mace for me (most likely due to level differences between the two of us, you and me.)
