Description Should you travel in Iceland, pay attention to how the mountains differ from those seen on the continent. They have a queer shape to them, usually lacking splendid peaks, in fact, the mountains often have rather flat summits, commonly bordered by almost vertical cliffs, which then give way to more sloping mountainsides. Indeed, as I have since learned, in the strictest sense, the heights of Iceland should not be regarded as mountains at all. I have ascertained from men learned on the matter, that during the Ice age much of the country was submerged, weighed down by enormous sheets of ice. The mountains are in fact more akin to seaside cliffs and bluffs, worn by centuries of waves. I recall this with some unease as I travel the countryside. Among the sparse towns, grazing sheep and roads that dot the lowlands, my mind on occasion wanders to the fact I am standing on what not too long ago was an oceanic floor. In what way this umbral past has shaped the land is uncertain, but occasionally, locals come upon odd markings or remains. Such finds are often connected to the many deep lakes. It is hardly beyond imagination that some relics might remain beneath the waves, even from such time when most of the country was still submerged beneath the titanic weight of ice.
It was with such thoughts that I came upon the fish. Of course, you may say that in the photo there are icicles on a rock, and the composition is simply due to the movement of water in the wind, coupled with freezing conditions. Surely, this is but a coincidence of nature, and it's resemblance to a face carved in walrus bones, found in an archaeological dig in the west of the country, is also merely the result of chance. I would have thought much the same as you, had I not foolishly decided to return to the lake later that night.
