SOme people think it's because he's Obito or something, but it's really to hide the fact that he is very much alive from his battle with the 1st Hokage, and he wears this new mask because he now has Nagato's rinnegan, so he made a mask with two eyeholes.

Ah yes, that would be a big explanation as to why Tobi has been able to defeat Sauske at some times but he lost to Sauske at other times.

He also quit the Akatsuki. He was done manipulating Zetsu, the only Akatsuki left, so he went and joined Kabuto and the rest o the dead akatsuki and the orochimaru body.
