Description Description used as inspiration:
These figures were seldom completely human, but often approached humanity in varying degree. Most of their bodies, while roughly bipedal, had a forward
clumping, and a vaguely canine cast. The texture of the majority was a kind of unpleasant rubberiness.
— H. P. Lovecraft, “ Pickman’s Model’

Ghoul Painting for my Dreamquest project. I have yet to do the textures and other refinements but I have been painting half the day and have other work to complete.

98% Corel Painter 11 and 2% of PS CS5

Roughly about 7 hours of work straight.

Edit: Well this is now finished, now that I have added textures and a lot of clean up. I tried to make him dirty and crusty as possible.

Was wondering how you would depict them!  I imagined them with more dog-like heads... sort of cute, actually.  This works though!  I suppose I'm just not sufficiently horrified by Lovecraft's creations.  After reading the Dream-Quest story, I felt more affectionate about these guys than I did before.

I like the rot detail on his skin. He is awfully clean for a ghoul, though, don't you think? For a species that gorges itself on the dead, I mean.

Well just because it feeds on the dead doesn't mean they have to be totally filthy. They are akin to canines however so perhaps he likes to go swimming like dogs do.

Well on these latest two character concepts I was keeping the BG minimal.

Thanks, I am also happy with the texture work that I have done on this piece. I am working on Randolph Carter now.

Lookin' good Probably falls under the "textures and other refinements" yet to be done, but it could use more hair imho.

Well, you are correct in that it could use more textures and refinements but hair I would have to politely argue no, only because of the fact that it is mentioned in the book that they were hairless and Randolph Carter was required to shave off his beard so that he could appear as one of them. I have really dirty this guy up and perhaps make him even a little crusty.

Now, in Pickman's Model I think it is mentioned that some still have hair but only in transition before they become a full fledged ghoul and for some reason I think that only full fledged ghouls can be physically in the Dream-lands.
